Youth employability and corporate partners in the Philippines

SOS Children’s Villages has been working in the Philippines for over sixty years. During this time, they have worked to support children’s rights to appropriate care, family, protection, education, and healthcare. One area SOS Children’s Villages have championed in the Philippines is youth employability.

SOS Philippines has a long history and excellent track record of working with corporate partners to help tackle the problem of youth unemployment.

Here is a story from one of their programmes in 2019…

Jay and Benedict were part of a group of 27 young people from SOS Children’s Villages Philippines who had the opportunity to visit the offices of TaskUs. The day trip was part of a corporate immersion and career orientation scheme, running in December 2019.

Most of the SOS young people still did not know what career they wanted to pursue. As the TaskUs’ employees gave talks describing their experiences, the SOS group were inspired to look at their future careers with enthusiasm rather than distress.

17-year-old Jay* was relieved when one of the employees explained that she had worked in the hospitality industry for ten years before she discovered her new passion working at TaskUs. It helped Jay to realise that there is no need to rush to find his interest or passion.

14-year-old Benedict*, on the other hand, was already sure of the career path he would like to embark on: Marine Transportation. Jay was inspired by the success story of another TaskUs employee, who had quickly climbed the ranks to become a team leader, demonstrating the value of hard work.

This was a fantastic opportunity for SOS’ young people to learn about the corporate environment whilst finding inspiration in the hardworking and ambitious employees.
