Top Tips for Mentors: Building Trust and Making a Difference

Becoming a mentor can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for both the mentor and the mentee. As a mentor, you are helping a young person to gain skills, perspective and experience, and helping them develop the confidence they need to thrive. However, it can also be challenging and require patience, empathy, and understanding.  

Here are some top tips for mentors working with young people: 

1.) Be aware of boundaries: Remember that you are a mentor, not a friend or parent. Be aware of your boundaries and respect your mentee’s privacy and personal space.

2.) Have fun: Remember that mentoring should be a fun and enjoyable experience for both you and your mentee. Find activities and projects that you both enjoy and make the most of your time together.

3.) Be positive: As a mentor, you have the power to shape your mentee’s outlook on life. Be positive and encouraging and help them to see the best in themselves.

4.) Be patient: Young people may not always understand the value of your advice or guidance right away. It can take time for them to process and internalise what you are telling them. Be patient and don’t give up on your mentee.

5.) Listen actively: One of the most important things you can do as a mentor is to listen to your mentee. By actively listening to what they have to say, you can understand their concerns, interests, and goals. This will help you to build trust and a strong relationship with your mentee.

6.) Be understanding: Remember that young people are still learning and growing, so they may not always make the best decisions. Be understanding of their mistakes and help them to learn from them.

7.) Encourage independence: While you are there to guide and support your mentee, it’s important to also encourage them to think for themselves. Help them to develop their own problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.

8.) Be consistent: Be consistent in your meetings and check-ins with your mentee. Let them know when you will be available to meet and make sure that you follow through.

9.) Set goals: Help your mentee to set realistic and achievable goals for themselves. This will give them a sense of direction and purpose and will help them to stay motivated.

10.) Be a role model: As a mentor, you are a role model for your mentee. Act in a way that you would want them to emulate. Show them that you are responsible, reliable, and trustworthy.

Mentoring is a powerful tool for positively impacting the life of a young person. As a mentor, you can guide and support them as they navigate the challenges of growing up and discovering their passions and goals, whilst helping them to build key skills for the workplace.  

However, it is important to remember that mentoring is not a one-way street, it is a partnership between the mentor and mentee where both parties can learn and grow. As a mentor, you have the ability to be a positive influence on a young person’s life, shaping their outlook and helping them to see their potential. So, be patient, stay committed and always be open to learning and growing alongside your mentee.
