Morocco Earthquake: SOS Children’s Villages Welcomes Unaccompanied Children

Six days on, the devastating earthquake in Morocco continues to take its toll, with 2,901 people dead and 5,530 injured as of 13th September. In addition, 300,000 people were affected, including an estimated 100,000 children.

In the disaster areas, SOS Children’s Villages in Morocco is organising humanitarian aid and providing assistance to those affected, including medical supplies, blankets and essential food aid, collected thanks to online donations and donations in kind.

The organisation also works in collaboration with partners who are responsible for transforming the foodstuffs into meals and distributing them to families and children.

In addition, the SOS Children’s Village in Ait Ourir is preparing to welcome 50 displaced families and has already welcomed 32 unaccompanied children who are being provided with interim alternative care, start tracking down family members and, if possible, reunify them. Tents have been erected, equipped with beds, medical kits and hygiene kits, to welcome them in the best possible conditions and meet their immediate needs.

Thunderstorms and rainfall are expected on Thursday, 14 September, raising the risk that people in the affected areas will not be able to take shelter and that their survival supplies will be damaged by the rain. Many people are still sleeping outdoors in fear of an aftershock.
