“There is bombing, fighting – we are scared”: The latest from Ukraine

In Ukraine on Tuesday 1 March, 18 children and their foster parents, and one staff member with her children, from SOS Children’s Village Brovary left to Lviv on an evacuation train from Kyiv. They were expected to reach Lviv that day, to depart to Poland on Wednesday.

One foster family with three children remains in SOS Children’s Village Brovary. They are safe and unharmed.

The foster families who remained in their homes in Luhansk region are safe and unharmed. Their homes are located in rural areas where there is no active fighting.

All other children, families and staff of SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine who are in the country now are safe and unharmed. In certain areas of Kyiv and in Luhansk region, many of them had to stay in bomb shelters almost constantly.

“About 60% of our staff are currently in the areas of active fighting. All are OK, but they and the families from our programmes are emotionally distressed, exhausted and scared. I am scared. There is bombing in the nights, and fighting in the days. There is threat that Kyiv will soon be surrounded. Kyiv could be the next Sarajevo.”
Serhii Lukashov, National director of SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine.

Every day SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine receives requests for support from foster families who weren’t in the programmes before. Today, two foster families received financial support for relocation to western Ukraine.

Staff of SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine will take up emergency relief work in the safer regions of western Ukraine where they relocated. In the Kyiv and Luhansk regions this is still not possible.

Poland

Early on 01-March, the second group of Ukrainian foster families consisting of 21 children and seven adults reached the Polish border, awaited by the colleagues of SOS Children´s Villages Poland. They were accommodated in the SOS Children’s Village Kraśnik.

“The children were showered with attention and chocolates. They enjoy it here very much. They enjoy how nice and peaceful SOS Children’s Village Kraśnik is.”
Hanna Kalyta, one of the co-workers from the group.

The children and foster parents are receiving the necessary psychological support.

The children and families who are facing the war in Ukraine urgently need your help. Please donate now and help them get through this time of crisis.
