Ghosts and ghouls may haunt us on Halloween, but for millions of children around the world, the real horror comes not from spooky stories but from the harsh reality of growing up without the love, protection, and support of a family.
Every child deserves to feel safe and cared for. Yet, right now, 1 in 10 children face the risk of growing up alone. Without parents, relatives or consistent care.
While some children hide from the harmless fears of Halloween, others hide from bombs, armed groups, and traffickers. Meanwhile, some flee conflict, disaster, or extreme poverty, left not with the fleeting memories of scary stories, but with the lasting (and very real) trauma of unimaginable horrors. And yet more children face the terror of being abandoned or separated from their parents, a fear no child should ever endure.
For these children, the fear doesn’t end when the masks come off. Loneliness, instability and a lack of safety can shape their entire futures, making it harder for them to stay in school, build healthy relationships, or even trust others. And these cycles can permeate generations, so that for these children, and the children of these children, breaking cycles of abuse, poverty and hardship becomes a constant challenge.
