The intensity of attacks in Ukraine has recently escalated. On 3 September 2024, Poltava was heavily bombarded, followed by early morning attacks in Lviv on 4 September 2024. Russian airstrikes have also targeted energy facilities and critical infrastructure in nine other Ukrainian regions in the past 24 hours.
In Poltava, two ballistic missiles struck the Military Institute of Communications and a nearby hospital, tragically causing at least 51 deaths and over 200 injuries. Despite the attack, SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine’s team in Poltava managed to guide children to safety and remains in constant contact with local authorities to support affected families.
In Lviv, explosions at 5:40 am local time on 4 September damaged over 50 buildings, including homes, schools, and clinics. Seven people, including three children, were killed. SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine’s Lviv office was not damaged, and the team is working closely with local authorities to provide mental health support, cash assistance, and essential supplies.
Despite the ongoing conflict, our colleagues in Ukraine are actively committed to supporting affected communities, including children facing the trauma of missile strikes. Our colleagues in Ukraine are coordinating with partners to ensure aid reaches those in need and have secured equipment to maintain operations amid power outages. The security situation is under constant review to protect staff and programme participants.
