Sunita, now aged 13, sadly lost both of her parents at a young age, her mother to jaundice and her father in a car accident. She now lives with her grandmother, Madhuri, in southern India.
Madhuri does her best to care for her granddaughter, but they both found the transition difficult and she was working multiple jobs to support them.
Thankfully, with support from SOS Children’s Villages, their lives have improved. Through the Kinship Care Programme, they receive essential financial support, easing their struggles.
Kinship care is when a child’s extended family steps in to care for them. With our support, this often means children can transition from an SOS Children’s Village back to living with their own family.
“Before, I cleaned four houses and suffered a lot. Now, I clean just one,” Madhuri shares. “The support helps with Sunita’s food and education.”
Sunita, a dedicated student, dreams of becoming a doctor. “I love science,” she says. “I feel happier now, and we spend time together.”
Madhuri has also benefitted from training provided by SOS Children’s Villages, learning how to better care for her granddaughter.
Their bond has strengthened and Sunita and Madhuri now both look forward to a brighter future together.
