On 17 and 18 September 2024, Lebanon was struck by a series of devastating explosions that tragically claimed the lives of at least 30 people, including a woman, an eight-year-old girl, and an eleven-year-old boy. Thousands more were injured as the attacks targeted communication devices. For two consecutive days, a series of wireless devices were detonated across various areas of Lebanon, including the Beqaa region, southern Beirut, and southern Lebanon.
Explosions occurred in public spaces such as cafés, streets, and shops, putting countless civilians, including children, in grave danger. Even medical staff who use these types of pagers were affected, resulting in injuries and the tragic death of one staff member. Some explosions even erupted inside homes, causing harm to many families.
According to Lebanon’s Health Minister, over 2,700 people were injured, with approximately 300 individuals reported in critical condition on the first day. A further 450 injuries occurred during the explosions on the following day. Many had to be sent abroad for specialised medical treatment due to the severity of their injuries. Hospitals across the country are overwhelmed and urgently requesting blood donations of all types, as medical professionals unite to respond to this heart-breaking crisis. Disturbingly, images from the scenes show severe injuries, particularly to faces and hands, with women and children among the wounded.
These incidents have further escalated the ongoing tensions in the country, exacerbating the conflict that has persisted since 7 October.
In light of these tragic events, we are relieved to report that no families or beneficiaries of SOS Children’s Villages Lebanon were harmed. While some of our FSP (Family Strengthening Programme) families and staff members live in the affected areas, we are thankful they are all safe. However, the trauma experienced by those who witnessed these horrific events cannot be underestimated. Many staff members watched helplessly and in fear as explosions erupted around them while returning home from work.
SOS Children’s Villages in Lebanon remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the children, youth, staff, and families under its care during these uncertain and dangerous times.
Our hope is for peace to return to Lebanon, allowing all children to live in safety and free from fear. Amidst such devastation, we are more committed than ever to our mission of supporting our communities and working tirelessly towards building better futures for the children, youth, and families under our care.
