Over 500 children in Gaza are now back in school thanks to our Emergency Education Response
More than 500 children from the second kindergarten level and early primary grades are now receiving daily education in Khan Younis.
In March 2025, their previous temporary educational site in Al-Mawasi, Rafah became unsafe and inaccessible due to its inclusion in active evacuation and military targeting zones. But now, the children are returning to school.
To help children keep learning safely, SOS Children’s Villages redirected our Emergency Education Response to a new site in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis (a humantiarian zone). At this new site, we furnished and equipped six classrooms. The classrooms support independent service delivery, improve educational outcomes, and help children recover from learning loss.
“Establishing an educational space during this difficult and critical time is very important. We feel honoured to continue fulfilling our mission, even in these challenging circumstances,” says Ahlam, third grade teacher.
Restoring education in Gaza
The new location, officially approved by the Ministry of Education, offers children access to structured learning and care. SOS Children’s Villages continues to work closely with UNICEF on approved educational materials. And SOS Children’s Villages also actively participates in the Education Cluster.
The Education Cluster is a platform for international and local organisations involved in education services.
In collaboration with a local school management committee, SOS Children’s Villages secured a dedicated space for our Emergency Education Project. This project specifically serves early childhood and lower primary grades. It’s allowed children to return to a learning routine, supported by trained SOS Children’s Villages teaching staff in Khan Younis.
“I love coming to school every day, especially for the English class. I enjoy learning. I come to school with happiness,” says Abdelkareem, third grade student.
Through our response, children in Gaza can learn, grow, and regain normalcy, even in the most difficult circumstances.
