In a world often marked by conflict, the Stomping for Peace initiative stands as a powerful call to action, advocating for the rights of children living in war-torn regions and showing their support for their peers affected by violence. Organised by SOS Children’s Villages, this movement empowers children to express themselves and take a stand for the rights of those suffering in conflict.
We believe it is crucial to listen to the voices of children, especially those impacted by armed conflicts. Through Stomping for Peace, children stomp their feet to symbolise their fight for rights and safety. This collective action aims to raise awareness about the devastating effects of war on young lives, calling for urgent action in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
As we approach the 35th anniversary of the Convention, approximately 400 million children continue to live in conflict zones, confronting the harsh realities of war, including loss, trauma, and exploitation. Even in peaceful countries, children are not shielded from these crises and are profoundly affected by the news, often grappling with feelings of fear, anger, and sadness.
Leading up to World Children’s Day on 20 November, SOS Children’s Villages has mobilised children across Europe. Schools will participate in large-scale stomping events, creating a powerful message: the world should not shake from bombs, but from the resolute stomping of children united for peace.
Advocating for children’s rights is essential for many reasons. Children are among the most vulnerable populations, requiring protection from exploitation and harm. When children feel safe and supported, they can develop hope for the future, free from the weight of trauma. Investing in their rights not only fosters their growth but also lays the foundation for a better future, as educated and safe children become responsible adults.
With over 30 countries participating in this initiative, the call for peace resonates on a global scale. On 20th November, the children’s messages will be delivered to the United Nations, emphasising the need for adherence to Article 38 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This article calls for the protection of children in armed conflicts, underscoring the responsibility of states to ensure their safety.
Stomping for Peace transcends a mere event; it embodies a movement driven by the passion and resolve of children standing up for their rights and those of fellow children whose lives are impacted by war. By participating in this initiative, children can elevate their voices and unite in the pursuit of a world where every child can flourish in safety and dignity.
