Serious consequences
“Children should never have to experience fear, violence or displacement. Such experiences deeply shake their sense of security and their trust in the world,” says Ghada Hachem, head of SOS Children’s Villages in Lebanon.
Many children react to war and uncertainty with fear, confusion and overwhelm, according to Hachem. It is particularly stressful for them when familiar structures break down or they are separated from familiar people and places. “These reactions are completely natural responses to completely unnatural circumstances.”
The escalation is now having a devastating impact on the population in Lebanon. According to official figures, more than 800,000 people have now been displaced from their homes. Around 590 emergency shelters have been opened, where over 125,000 people are seeking protection, including numerous families with children.
Safety and stability for children
Despite the tense situation, children and families supported by SOS Children’s Villages in Lebanon are currently safe, with our teams remaining in close contact to ensure they continue receiving the care and support they need.
“The safety of the children is our top priority. Our teams are monitoring the situation very closely and are taking all necessary precautions,” says Hachem.
At the same time, SOS Children’s Villages provide targeted support to children and families with psychosocial help. In the facilities, caregivers ensure that children maintain the most stable daily routines possible, for example through school, playing together and regular activities.
“Stability is enormously important for children. Reliable relationships, a safe environment and a regular everyday life give them the space to process traumatic experiences,” says Hachem. With emotional support and professional accompaniment, it can be possible for children to regain confidence and develop hope.
Appeal to the international community
In view of the increasing violence, SOS Children’s Villages are calling on the international community to protect children and civilians.
“Children must be protected from the effects of conflict at all times. Their safety, well-being and dignity are non-negotiable,” says Hachem.
Aid organizations must also be able to work safely to support affected families. International solidarity and long-term support are crucial for children in crisis areas to receive protection and prospects.
“Every child deserves security and dignity, no matter where they live. Especially in times of war, the protection of children must have top priority,” says Hachem.
