Gary Elden OBE, CEO, SThree plc
“By developing a close long-term partnership with SOS Children, I have seen remarkable progress in areas like Chipata. The abandoned children in this under-resourced region now have the care, education and hope they need to grow up safely. I am very proud of our contribution to date and look forward to further supporting SOS Children with their work to transform children’s lives.”
Strengthening communities - spotlight on Chipata
- SThree has continued long-term support for Chipata Village, Zambia. They contributed to the development of the Village, which is in one of the most deprived and disease-hit areas of the world. A house in the Village was funded by SThree and is now home to 8 children.
- Other projects include a medical truck; medical supplies and healthcare; computer tablets for the primary school with solar charging unit; uniforms, books and school fees; sports equipment and a playground; investments into micro-enterprises and the Family Strengthening Programme; and vocational training places at the Chipata Trades Institute.
- SThree worked with SOS Children’s Villages and Paint-It-Forward to hold a charity auction in 2015 of paintings by children from the Village, which are now displayed around the world.
During their visit in 2013 members of the SThree team took part in the Paint It Forward Project with children in Chipata
Throughout their corporate partnership, SThree have repeatedly supported SOS Children’s Villages emergency appeals including Nepal, Haiti, China and East Africa, as well as the refugee crisis in Europe.
Education and Training
The company is a supporter of lifelong learning from early years’ education, right through to undergraduate scholarships and skills training for adults. Their support in this area includes: providing fully-funded university scholarships for two female students, one in Malawi and the other in the USA (having grown up in Zimbabwe). Funding covers tuition, boarding, travel and educational resources such as laptops and books.
Employees in the USA fund-raised for two years to fund a computer lab for a community centre in Chicago. SThree has also funded SOS Mother and Aunt training in Cambodia, and flip cameras to equip young filmmakers behind the innovative and award-winning video website, ‘Our Africa’ that explores Africa through the eyes of children living there, as well as two apprenticeships in Berlin, Germany. Employees across Asia are currently raising funds to enable children to go to elementary school in Manila, the Philippines.
As part of their corporate partnership, SThree continues to match fund the money employees raise for SOS Children’s Villages around the world. The company has organised several trips so that employees can experience Village life first hand. The most recent trip in October 2016, received 99 applications with two people selected from different parts of the business to spend a week in Chipata Village, which involved creating a new library.
