Kfarhay

Youths from Kfarhay, LebanonKfarhay, or Kfar Hay, is found in the coastal Batroun city, in North Lebanon. Its population is very small, with just over 500 residents.

With the violent clashes within the country, uncertainty hounds most citizens - especially for the youth who have difficulties finding work.

Effects of the civil war

The economy of the town is propped by the production of olive oil and tobacco, and the farming of tobacco plants and olives. Part of the reason for the slow growth is the effects from the civil war and the heavy borrowing by the government to rebuild the country.

Lebanon no longer attracts foreign investment like before because of red tape and corruption. The national government collapsed in 2011 because it was affected by its neighbour, Syria. As a result, concentration and funds are spent on main cities leaving places like Kfar Hay neglected.

Children of Lebanon

Although Lebanon is a middle income country, poverty in many places still exists. About 300,000 live in extreme poverty, with 1 million earning less than $4 daily. The North Governate where Kfarhay is located is the most deprived region in Lebanon. Many of those who used to afford electricity, food and water are now falling below the poverty line. 30% of people in this region have no access to health care, basic utilities, and access to education.

The children are constantly in fear of their lives. As recent as 2012, there were clashes in Tripoli which led to the death of several people. The effects ongoing Syrian war continues to spill over as refugees burden the camps and cause even more crowding in slum areas and shanty towns where living conditions are harsh. The children cannot go to school and do not get proper nutrition and health care.

SOS Children’s Village Kfarhay

Children from Kfarhay in LebanonOur work in Kfarhay began in 1995 during the conflict in southern Lebanon, between Hezbollah forces and the Israeli army. It was a difficult time to start SOS Children Village but the need was urgent as many children needed care.

SOS Children’s Village Kfarhay has several SOS families which care for children without parents. Many of the children that come to the SOS families are traumatised and in desperate need of counselling. Some are injured and need therapy, while others have no access to education because of lack of funds. We are providing psychological care, therapy for those who need it, and training for parents.

Prepared for an independent future

The children in the SOS families attend school from nursery up to secondary level. They are encouraged to play with local children. After secondary level, the teenagers are supported to pursue higher education or begin training for work skills.

SOS Children has a transition house to prepare young adults for the next phase in their lives. They are supervised by a counsellor while in our youth programme. Other facilities in SOS Children Kfarhay are the open fields, open theatre, workshop areas, multi-purpose hall, and administrative building.

Vulnerable children in Kfarhay need support to ensure they have thriving futures. You can help a child in our Children's Village by becoming a child sponsor today.
