SOS Children's Village Rawalpindi opened in 1989 as the third location of SOS Children in Pakistan. The Village cares for up to 250 lone children, and also boasts a school, medical centre, and technical training centre.
Commonly known as Pindi, Rawalpindi is a city in the Pothohar region, in the North-Western province of Punjab.
The largest SOS Children’s Village in Pakistan
The Children's Village in Rawalpindi is in scenic countryside on the banks of the Soan River. It takes care of orphaned and abandoned children, who live in an SOS family headed by an SOS mother. The largest SOS Children's Village in Pakistan, it has a range of facilities to support the children living there. These include an SOS School for all children to study and SOS Youth Homes for adolescents who are ready to move out of their SOS families. There is also the opportunity for young people to receive technical training, and a medical centre to prevent and treat illness. All of these facilities are also open to children and young people living in the nearby community.
Being near the country's capital, Islamabad, the Village often welcomes esteemed guests, who express their delight at the cheerful environment and happy children. Likewise, the children are able to take advantage of living close to many interesting places, and often go on organised excursions. As in all the Villages in Pakistan, we greatly value children's education, and provide a range of extra-curricular activities and regular tuition after school.
Quality education and training
The SOS school comprises of a primary school, junior school, girls’ high school and boys’ high school. It provides a quality education in subjects including science and computer studies. The school is open to children from the community. We decided to build our own SOS School to ensure that the children received a sound education and make friends from the surrounding community.
In 2000, we established the SOS Technical Training Institute. It offers training in various trades, including air conditioning and electrical engineering. Our technical training courses were so popular that a second intake has been added and hundreds of unemployed youth are being helped to earn a livelihood. Following the success the technical training project, we opened the SOS Training Institute for Automobile 2003. This unique centre has well-equipped, purpose-built workshops for auto-mechanic and auto-electrical trades. 5000 students have already qualified from the institutes.
At the Village in Rawalpindi there is an SOS Medical Centre with a qualified doctor. The centre meets the medical needs of the children within the Village, and also serves the outside community. There is also an emergency shelter for earthquake orphans located in Rawalpindi. Here, families affected by natural disasters are supplied with provisions and services to support the welfare of their children.
