Formerly known as Lyallpur, Faisalabad is a city in the province of Punjab. It is an important industrial city, and the third most populous in Pakistan.
After a population boom, pressure has been placed on existing services and infrastructure. SOS Children gives struggling families and vulnerable children the tailored support they need.
An expanding city
After Karachi and Lahore, Faisalabad is the third largest city in Pakistan. The area was sparsely populated before the foundation of the city in 1880. In 1901 the population was 9,171, by 1951 it was 179,000, and in 1998 the population was over two million. The wider Faisalabad district had a population of over five million in 1998. Part of this growth is due to Faisalabad increased role in industry, trade and the economy.
Children's Village relies upon local support
We opened the SOS Children's Village Faisalabad in 1988, with many local philanthropists funding the family homes. Here, children who are unable to live with their family, find a caring home in the Children's Village. They are looked after by an SOS mother and live with other children who become their SOS brothers and sisters.
As in every location we work, we are dependant on the community for their support, as their involvement is vital for our operation and expansion. Special events are regularly arranged by various donors and are greatly enjoyed by the children, as are excursions to interesting places.
Community spirit in the Village
In 1997, we built an SOS youth home. Unfortunately, this is quite far from the Village so the
younger boys were unable to attend the SOS school. Therefore three residential homes were built for this age group next to the school area. The older boys who are attending college, or undergoing training, continue to live in the youth home.
The Village is well-established and, over the years, has benefited from upgrades and additions to the facilities. The administrative offices were recently renovated and a spacious auditorium was added.
The SOS school comprises of a primary school, a girls’ high school, and a soon-to-be-completed boys’ high school. Children and young people from the community are also welcome to attend the SOS School. Likewise, the SOS social centre which provides health advice, treatment and counselling, is also open to the local community. Facilities at this centre include two medical treatment rooms and a small operating theatre.
