Our second Children's Village in Pakistan, Dhodial is located in the Mansehra District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Since 1982 it has been providing orphaned and abandoned children with a family home.
Mansehra District is home to a diverse population, and dramatic scenery. SOS Children's Village Dhodial is located in an open valley, with a backdrop of mountains and close to the River Siren. With these beautiful surroundings, it is a favourite place for children from the other SOS Children's Villages in Pakistan to go during their summer holidays.
Supporting children's educational and medical needs
As well as the Children's Village, there is an SOS school and college which also cater for the outside community. This college has been upgraded to intermediate level and brings quality educational facilities to the remote area. It is a great credit to the children that they are academically high achievers and many of them have excelled in their pursuit of higher education. There is also a skills training centre for girls, with a range of subjects including knitting and embroidery. Girls from the community are also welcome here.
When children are ready to leave an SOS family, they can move to the SOS youth home, situated in Abbottabad. Young people here attend local schools and colleges. In the evening they go to the SOS vocational training centre, where they can learn the trades of an electrician or welder, as well as computer skills. Successful students are awarded certificates from the Skill Development Centre in Peshawar.
An SOS medical centre provides treatment and care for both the families in the SOS Children’s Village and up to 200 local people every month.
Extra-curricular activities available to all
The Village and Youth home have recently upgraded sports facilities. New basketball and volleyball courts are in the process of being built. Regular physical training and karate instructors are provide courses. Besides this, the children have are able to take part in programmes organised by the Adventure Foundation, which include skiing, trekking, camping and rock climbing.
Emergency aid after earthquake
The population was affected very badly by the 2005 Pakistan earthquake. We helped give essential support to families during this disaster, as well as long-term support to the community. We established an emergency shelter for earthquake orphans near the SOS Children’s Village. We hope to build a permanent facility, where these children will be moved to. The Government of the North West Frontier Province has been approached for the grant of a suitable site.
