Haiti earthquake 2010: A timeline

With so many dead, many children could not be reunited with their families. We provided homes in our existing locations and opened a new Village so we could care for more.

Five years ago today, Haiti was struck by one of the most devastating earthquakes in modern times. Hundreds of thousands lost their lives and more than 3 million were affected. Among the hardest hit were the thousands of children who were separated from their parents.

Thanks to the overwhelming response from our supporters, we were able to provide shelter for hundreds of these children, as well as a home for those who could not return to their families. Today, emergency response has become ongoing support for thousands.

Our interactive slideshow shows you how events unfolded from the disaster itself right up the present day.

A new home for 2015

This January, five years after the disaster struck, we are celebrating the opening of a new SOS Children's Village in Les Cayes, southern Haiti. SOS mothers have been caring for children in Les Cayes since shortly after the earthquake, with SOS families living in rented accommodation. This month, 14 SOS families will begin a new chapter of their lives in their wonderful Village home.
