Child Sponsorship Report 2012, from Monaragala, Sri Lanka

A child sponsorship report from Monaragala in Sri Lanka. This charity report covers the first half of 2012.

Dear sponsor,

It’s summer – the warmest of the seasons – and with much warmth from the SOS Family at your sponsored SOS Children's Village Monaragala, it is my pleasure to write to you once again. Thank you for your kind greetings for Christmas and New Year 2012 to all of us.

This time we have made an effort to improve our letter wherein we try and explain to you little more about the activities of your sponsored SOS Children’s Village. I hope you like the new look.

SOS Children’s Village

Eight boys and six girls were welcomed to the SOS Family in Monaragala during last six months. Children with new thoughts and aspirations began the New Year 2012 giving prominence to New Year customs and rituals in their Family Houses. SOS mothers and Co-workers too joined the children in these family celebrations.

It was at Monaragala SOS Children’s Village that the splendid event Holiday Camp was held in April this year. The participants were children under 15 years of age, living in all six SOS Children’s Villages in the country. 25 children from each SOS Children’s Village took part in the Holiday Camp programme exclusively organized for them with the intention of strengthening and deepening relationships among SOS Communities in Sri Lanka. The whole Programme was a combination of aesthetics, sports, education, outings, competitions and entertainment. Children of SOS Children’s Village, Monaragala won the first place in all the aesthetic events displayed at the Holiday Camp and finally emerged victorious, becoming champs of Holiday Camp 2012.

Children’s education is a priority of ours. We open avenues for children to pursue in education, making use of all facilities bestowed on them to be erudite in society, as fully fledged citizens. Some children do place their accent on education responding well to the opportunities set before them to take advantage of.

SOS Nursery

The SOS Nursery began its yearly programmes in January this year with an inaugural ceremony where the purpose of the SOS Nursery was explained to the parents. The customary welcome party was hosted by the senior children to receive their younger brothers and sisters who are to follow their footsteps as ones belonging to SOS Nursery.

National Independence Day commemorations took place at the Nursery with the participation of children. Also they sang Buddhist devotional songs in public to mark the festival of Poson, recalling the advent of Buddhism in Sri Lanka long time ago.

SOS Family Strengthening Programmes

The Family Strengthening Programme is being conducted in two locations. There are 115 families receiving benefits from these programmes. 225 children receiving educational facilities through benefits they are being offered. The purpose of this programme is to support children of chosen impoverished families, living around our SOS Children’s Village.

The Child Club established in one of the Family Strengthening Programmes locations was awarded as the best Child Club in the district of Monaragala. This was a great honour to the members of the Family Strengthening Programme in Monaragala. This was the third consecutive year that the same Family Strengthening Programme Child Club clinched this award. Valuable programmes were conducted to enlighten the lives of children. Identifying children’s mental states, promoting elements of positive thinking, personal development, targets in education, were some of the main exercises done for children during this period. Seven students have passed the Ordinary Level Examination and are now studying Advanced Level having benefited from our educational programmes.

I would like to thank you for being with us and supporting our work for the children. Without your support and friendship, it would not be possible for us to do what we do in our SOS Children’s Villages. Your friendship and support is very much appreciated.

With best wishes from all of us, I remain.

SOS Children's Village Monaragala
