A child sponsorship report from Dhaka in Bangladesh. This charity report covers the first half of 2012.

Dear sponsor,

Warmest greetings to you! Half a year passed and it is a great pleasure to reach you through this letter and share with you the lately happenings in the SOS Children’s Village Dhaka. It gives us another opportunity as well to forward our gratitude.

SOS Children’s Village Dhaka

This year 17 children (10 girls and 7 boys) are welcomed to the Village. 155 children are living in 15 family houses and 29 grownup girls are living outside hostels. Now, our Village is the home of 184 children. Among them 159 are in education and 25 are under aged and not yet started schooling. 8 girls have passed in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination and 12 girls have appeared in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examination. 3 girls have admitted for higher education in graduate level whether 4 girls have integrated into the society through employment.

On the occasion of International SOS Children’s Village Day 2012 a get together programme of former boys and girls of the Village was held on 23 June where in total 100 former children along with their spouses and children were attended, passed time in their SOS families and shared their feelings.  They all expressed their happiness to attend in such a nice gathering. Many of them become overwhelmed and emotional in presence of lot of near and dear ones of their generation as well as new generation. A discussion session was held on that occasion and the programme was ended with a cultural function staged by the children of the Village.     

One of our psychologically challenged girls won a Gold medal in 4x100M Relay and a Silver Medal in 100M Sprint in ‘Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011’. The Boys Rugby Team (under 11) became Champion in the ‘Health First Mini Rugby Tournament 2011’. SOS Girls Club Dhaka observed International Mother’s Day through discussion session and cultural function.

Two girls have finished a ‘Recitation and Presentation’ course and another two girls are receiving handicrafts course on ‘Glass painting’. A group of 10 children is learning swimming.  Children are also participating in Spoken English class, dance and music class as well as musical instruments playing classes, drawing classes, etc.  Children are also attending handball and volleyball camp. Different awareness programmes, skill development programmes, entertaining sessions were also held.

SOS Youth Village Dhaka

SOS Youth Village Dhaka is a home of 64 youths. Among them, 37 boys has been living in SOS Youth Village Dhaka and other 27 youths are living in hostel. 5 boys have appeared in Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examination. 2 boys have passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination.  This year 5 boys have integrated into the society through employment.

The Boys Rugby Team of the Youth Village became 3rd in the ‘2nd School Rugby Tournament 2011’.

SOS Vocational Training Centre Dhaka

At present, 172 students are receiving technical education in 5 trades from this training centre. Among them 12 students are from different SOS Children’s Villages. Last year, 70 students successfully completed the courses. The Training Centre organized a certificate distribution ceremony where every student got certificate and a tool box.

SOS College Dhaka

Now SOS College has 1133 students including 121 from SOS Children’s Village Dhaka. The college has shown good result in all public examination during the year. In all respect pass rate was 100%.

39 students were awarded Hermann Gmeiner Scholarships for academic excellence and one teacher also received the Hermann Gmeiner Academic Award. The Students brought out a wall magazine on observance on the 40th anniversary of the Victory Day of our country. They also observed the Foundation Day of the college, International Mother Language Day and Independence Day with due respect and solemnity through discussion session and cultural function.

The Annual Sports Competition was held at the beginning of the year.  Sports activities of the college are opening the door for students to explore their abilities and interest about sports and physical exercise. Beside these, the students are making them eligible for future through Debating Club, Cultural Club, Science Club, Mathematics Club, Language Club and Computer Club.
