A child sponsorship report from Chittagong in Bangladesh. This charity report covers the first half of 2012.

Dear sponsor,

Warmest greetings to you! Half a year passed and it is a great pleasure to reach you through this letter and share with you the lately happenings in the SOS Children’s Village Chittagong. It gives us another opportunity as well to forward our gratitude.

SOS Children’s Village Chittagong

Presently, 118 children are growing up at SOS Children’s Village Chittagong - 48 are boys and 70 are girls. 106 children are in education. Besides, 21 elder girls are now living in outside hostels and all of them are in education.  Last year, 6 boys and girls passed Primary Education Completion exam and 3 girls passed the Junior School Certificate exam. 3 girls passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam. Four girls appeared at the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam. We have welcomed 16 new children during this period.

Five-day long series programme was organized on International SOS Children’s Village Day. Seminar on “SOS Children’s Village - model of family-based child care” was arranged. Open Art Competition was arranged where 700 children participated. Sports, football match, etc. are also took place.  In concluding day, ‘Big Children’s Party’ and ‘SOS Children’s Village Exhibition’ were held in the Village.

SOS Youth Village Chittagong

36 boys are living at SOS Youth Village Chittagong and all of them are in education. Twenty eight boys are living in the boarding houses for study and training. 5 passed the Primary Education Completion exam and 5 passed the Junior School Certificate exam. 3 boys passed the SSC exam and two boys appeared at the HSC exam. A workshop on “Career Guidance” was arranged. A counseling programme on education was held.

SOS Vocational Training Centre Chittagong

Presently, 29 children are receiving training in SOS Vocational Training Centre Chittagong - 14 in Carpentry Trade and 15 in Light Engine Mechanics Trade. Till now 327 students have passed from the training centre. A certificate awarding ceremony was arranged in April this year.

SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Chittagong

At present we have 285 students in SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Chittagong - 86 are from SOS Children’s Village, 176 are outside students and 23 are Below Poverty Line (BPL) children. 23 students appeared at the Primary Education Completion exam and passed. 5 students achieved talent pool scholarship. Annual Sports of school was held in January. Hermann Gmeiner Scholarship Giving Ceremony was held in February. 10 students achieved Hermann Gmeiner Scholarship and a teacher received Hermann Gmeiner Academic Award.

SOS Social Centre Chittagong

Through Family Strengthening Programme (FSP), presently we are providing educational and basic healthcare support for 480 children from 336 families of the neighbouring community who are at risk of losing parental care. Among 480 children, 235 are boys and 245 are girls. 468 children are in education and 12 are non-school going. Children are getting tutorial support from 14 study centres. 59 children appeared at the Primary Education Completion exam and came out successfully. 14 children appeared at Junior School Certificate exam. Among them nine have passed and five have failed. Two girls passed in the SSC exam. At present, FSP indirect beneficiaries are 286 children. Besides, 36 poor women’s of the neighbouring community are now getting skill training through the social centre - 26 in tailoring and 10 in embroidery.
