Another year comes to a close and so does another chapter in SOS Children Village Shillong. A year that saw positive interventions happening in the lives of young innocent children who would have otherwise been left to their own devices hadn’t it been for your kindness. As an acknowledgement of your support and help, we at SOS Children Village Shillong would like to say a big thank you. In the letter that follows we enumerate the work that was done which made a difference in the lives of our children.
SOS Children’s Village
Presently we are extending care to 141 children in the village and 48 boys in the youth house. Most of the children are enrolled in schools while the grown up girls and boys are securing higher education from universities under various disciplines and professional courses. The academic result this year has been satisfactory with close to ninety pass percentage. Out of the six children who gave the tenth standard exams, five secured a first division. Many of the youngsters are in certificate/diploma courses while a few are undergoing apprenticeship training. All the children and young adults are gradually inching towards building a secure future for themselves.
Sound health of our children, mothers and co-workers is of paramount importance. With this aim in mind various preventive measures were taken. These included medical camps, vaccine immunization done throughout the year for the children and mothers in the nearby dispensary to reduce the occurrence of diseases and infirmities.
Other than meeting the basic requirements of the children like food, shelter, education and health care, we at SOS Village try to conduct special programs all the year around in collaboration with individuals and/or organisations. While festivals like Republic Day and days like Women’s Day, SOS Day and Mother’s Day were celebrated with great fervour, fun, games and cultural programs, various workshops and training programs were conducted to spread awareness and enhance skills of the mothers and the children. The areas covered included wild life conservation, integrated child protection scheme, career fair etc. in addition to such events, the children also participated in competition like quiz, games and sports and other cultural activities. These and other such occasions/activities will most certainly go a long way in inculcating in our children a spirit of healthy competition, leadership skills and team work.
Family Strengthening Programme(FSP)
The FSP is our approach to make positive interventions in the lives of families with children who due to various practical constraints cannot be brought under the fold of the SOS Children’s village. At present we are taking care of 250 children. The children have been admitted to schools and most of them are doing well. 8 self help groups have been established in order to facilitate the running of the program. Various income generation activities and capacity building programs and workshops are conducted to make the families under the FSP self sustainable secure units.
All in all it has been a fruitful and rewarding year for the children and workers at SOS Children’s Village Shillong. This letter was a small attempt to keep you abreast with the constructive work that was put in. It wouldn’t have been a success without your generosity for which the SOS family along with the children are indebted.
