Another year comes to a close and so does another chapter in SOS Children Village Hojai. A year that saw positive interventions happening in the lives of young innocent children who would have otherwise been left to their own devices hadn’t it been for your kindness. As an acknowledgement of your support and help, we at SOS Children Village Hojai would like to say a big thank you. In the letter that follows we enumerate the work that was done which made a difference in the lives of our children.
SOS Children’s Village
Presently we are providing for 214 children in village and 79 young adults in youth facility. The children and youngsters are enrolled in schools and are performing well. Those who cleared their twelfth standard exams have secured admission in various universities and vocational colleges. A few others are working as trainees in fields like hotel management, industrial accounting and so on. All our youngsters are working hard to achieve their goals and carve out a secure live for themselves. We are also happy to inform that this year one of our girls found personal happiness through marriage.
Another area of concern for us at SOS Village is to ensure that our children are hale and hearty. It was heartening to see that apart from excelling at studies and other activities, our children also kept good health. We collaborate with the nearby hospitals to organise regular medical check-up camps like eye, dental, and general health camps for our children and mothers. The civil hospital also provides us free medicines and first aids for the village dispensary.
Other than meeting the basic requirements of the children like food, shelter, education and health care, we at SOS Village try to conduct special programs all the year around in collaboration with individuals and/or organisations with a view to enhancing the personal and inter-personal skills of the children and fine tuning the proficiency of our mothers and co-workers.
While festivals like Id, Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day and Biswa Kami puja, Bihu were celebrated amidst great fervour we also had workshops and training programs throughout the year for the mothers and children. The areas covered included awareness programs on health, HIV-AIDS and sex education, career guidance, enrichment program on nutritional foods, child protection policy and child rights, parenting skills and alternative ways of disciplining etc.
Family Strengthening Programme (FSP)
FSP is another module of work done by SOS Children’s Village. The aim is to extend support to such children who live in families where the fear of the loss of anchor looms large. At present under Family Strengthening Programme (FSP), we are looking after 301 vulnerable children from 90 poverty stricken families. Training programs on cutting and tailoring, food processing and animal husbandry are conducted to enhance the skills of the caregiver mothers. Workshops on topics such as parenting knowledge, legal rights of women, importance of family planning etc are conducted to make them aware citizens. We have supported 50 families by promoting income generation activities in different sectors like, cow-rearing, cutting and tailoring, shop-keeping, dry fish vending, rice business, etc. Slowly but steadily these families are moving towards becoming self reliant and self sustainable units
This brief letter was an attempt to keep you informed about the kind of work that we have been able to carry out in SOS Children’s Village Hojai. We have been able to have a fulfilling year both for our children and the mothers and other co-workers owing to the timely and generous help offered by you. Your faith in our cause and the manifestation of it in the form of monetary and other help has gone a long way in taking our cause a step further. We the SOS Children Village family express our deeply felt gratitude.
