Child Sponsorship Report 2011, from Aboisso, Ivory Coast

A child sponsorship report from Aboisso in Ivory Coast. This charity report is from the end of 2011.

Dear Sponsor,

It is with great pleasure that we give you the latest news about your sponsored children from SOS Children's Village Aboisso. First, we thank you so much for all the support and care you bring to these wonderful children. They are also grateful to you.

Spite of the comeback of families and children to Abobo, the village shows great enthusiasm. Of course when the children from Abobo left Aboisso, it was with a great emotion. Their brothers and sisters from Aboisso were very sad to assist to their departure after six months living together.

The academic year 2011-2012 started on October 24, 2011 and your sponsored children were very happy to meet up with their classmates again. They received the necessary school stationeries before classes starting.

Therefore, 17 of your very small sponsored children have been enrolled this year in SOS Nursery that number of pupils is 90. In order to constantly improve the quality of education, the teachers have initiated an educational project on the topic "Discovery classes and creating activities, means of a child motor functions development.”

Moreover, SOS Primary School is at full strength with 210 pupils including 55 children from the village. All these pupils receive from our teachers, a complete and high-quality education based on children’s rights. In addition to the high-standard classes given and the promotion of excellence, the school has decided this year to introduce computer in the programs in order to initiate pupils on how to use a computer. To succeed in that project the teachers were trained in computer science (Word and Excel).  The school has diversified its extra-curricular activities through the resumption of training for basketball and karate.

47 of your sponsored children from the first grade to the A-level are enrolled in the secondary school of the district, 12 youth are enrolled in apprenticeship, technical and vocational training.

In terms of health, children and young people renewed their inoculation against Hepatitis B and are waiting for the one against typhoid fever this year. But the new admitted children got vaccinated against meningitis A + C and the other vaccinations were updated. All the educational staff (mothers, aunts, educators) and two young girls were trained in hygiene and cleaning-up promotion by a partner NGO.

In the socio cultural aspect, mothers and aunts from both villages (Abobo and Aboisso) had a tour to Elubo (Ghana), went to the seaside during the Mother's Day celebration.

The children took part in a special child Independence Day called "The Gig Teuf" at the culture palace. They also participated in artistic holiday activities (ballets, songs, sketches and poems) initiated by the Ministry of Culture. There was also a "Friends of children Space" organized by Save the Children in the village. Your sponsored children were winner of these competitions. The village also hosted the 50th anniversary of the Convention on Statelessness organized by the Ministry of Human Rights and Civil Liberties in partnership with the High Commission for Refugees.

Finally, for a month, the children participated in the activities celebrating the 40th of SOS Children's Villages Côte d'Ivoire through cleaning-up action at the city hall of Abobo, factories and a nursery visits, football competition and crafts. During the official ceremony on November 19, 2011 at SOS Children's Village Abobo, children performed wonderful shows the public (guests, donors, friends ...) greatly appreciated.

Talking about Family Strengthening Programme, it currently cares for 150 beneficiaries, including 125 new children from 44 families. The admissions committee took place in July at "Soucoura", the beneficiary community. These families received food kits, school kits and benefited from health care, psychological and social support and the establishment of administrative documents for 21 children. This program got 80% success rate for A-level exam in 2011.

Dear sponsor, the children are very happy for all your gifts and your support to them. Together with them we are so grateful to you and wish you merry Christmas and happy New Year 2012.
