The SOS Children’s Village Canchungo
During school holidays, children aged 8 to 12 years received visits from their biological relatives and were happy to see their parents/relatives. Back from vacation, they have continued to participate in village activities such as games, competitions, recitation of poems, songs, riddles held in the Village hut. Also, children have taken part in visits to historic sites like the Cacheu monument, a walk to Leandro beach, and Canchungo and competed in the soccer tournament in conjunction with children from the neighboring community.
In September 12 new children (6 boys and 6 girls) were admitted. All were between the age of 1 to 5 years old.
The last quarter of 2011, four of our SOS Mothers attended the eight-week basic SOS mothers and auntie’s training programme in the SOS regional training center based in the Gambia.
The SOS Children’s Village Canchungo also hosted a national two day workshop for SOS Mothers, SOS Aunts and the SOS Staff members on the latest development of sponsorship issues.
The 1st of June, International children’s day, was celebrated in SOSNursery and all the children were involved in activities such as the Montessori programme, followed by a fashion parade, dancing and a sport competition was organized between SOS Children and Children from the community. All enjoyed also a nice lunch together that day.
The academic year 2011/2012 started October 3rd in all SOS International Schools. 16 SOS Children were enrolled at the SOS Nursery. There, children learn to speak Portuguese, to draw, to paint, to socialize, to play games, learn the basic of counting and participate in many other activities organized within the Nursery.
SOS International Primary School

Sport and Cultural Programme
On the 6th of June SOS Children’s Villages International launched a travelling exhibition on the Rights of the child at the Portuguese cultural center in Bissau to mark the 40th anniversary of the organization’s work in Africa and as part of activities under the African Child fortnight under the patronage of the First Lady of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. Some children from the SOS Children's Village of Canchungo were invited to participate to the event and performed dances, songs and took part in poem a contests.
The SOS Children's village in Canchungo, held on 15 June, an ‘open door’ day still within the frame of the 40th anniversary celebrations of SOS Children’s Villages work in Africa and the African children’s Fortnight. This was a great way to share what SOS Children’s Villages is doing with the community, and allowed children, youth and adults from the community to acquaint themselves with the functioning and life within the SOS Children's village. During the ceremony some houses was inaugurated by local sponsors. Board member, the Governor of the city, the king of Canchungo, Religious Authorities, and guests were invited to visit family houses, had the opportunity to see the needlework craft, done by the young girls and SOS mothers.
These past weekends, SOS Children, their mothers and some co-workers are busy preparing for the Christmas holidays. The houses are already painted, flowers that embellish the village are all cut and children have made their decoration with garlands of all colors. At night the village is lit up with beautiful coloured lamps hanging. The hut that serves as a place of amusement has also been overhauled, painted and decorated.
Gifts will be distributed to children during Christmas. Holiday activity will include poetry recitations, dramas, songs, fashion shows and dances, followed by a cocktail thrown to the benefit of SOS mothers and SOS Children.
The Children’s Village Medical Post open normally and receives the SOS Children and Mothers; the doctor comes only when necessary.
Family Strengthening Programme
The programme aims to help families and communities to be self-reliant in caring for their vulnerable children and ensures their basic survival and development needs are met. In order to achieve this, the programme has supported families to establish Family Development Plans, setting their goals, each party's contribution and timeframe. While some hand-outs are provided to these children and their care-givers (which mainly include: nutrition assistance, medical support, educational assistance, supports in getting birth certificated, sensitizations) the programme also focuses on helping care-givers gain financial independence in caring for their children. The FSP of Canchungo supports 103 families (465 children - 255 boys and 210 girls) coming from 7 locations in the region of Canchungo. As part of the programme, a community school was rehabilitated, for the benefit of the children directly participating in the programme but all other community children too.
The SOS Children’s Village Canchungo, SOS Mothers, SOS Aunts, all the staff members and your sponsored child, wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
