Child Sponsorship Report 2011, from Migdal Haemek, Israel

A child sponsorship report from Megadim, Migdal Haemek, in Israel. This report was written in 2011.

Dear sponsor,

I am happy to take this opportunity to update you about the past 7 month's developments in our village Megadim.

Over the course of 2010 and of the past months we have invested many efforts in the maintenance and repairs of our village children's houses and grounds, many roofs were waterproofed and some buildings were repainted on the outside.

The past 7 months were very good for Megadim, the number of children housed in the village was at full capacity most of the time, there are 18 children at the Day Care Center inside the village for children from Migdal Haemek. These children arrive after school and after a lengthy, full day at the center with hot lunch and help with homework, they return home in the evenings happy and content.

Our Youth home inside the village went through a change of personnel as a new mother replaced the couple there, quite successfully. A new youth home was completed early this year to house the graduates of the village who are in need of returning to the village during army service.

As we have done for many years in the past, this year we maintained our strong connection with the local community. We hosted groups from various agencies as well as our mayor, who continues to refer to the village as one of the better neighborhoods in the city.

We maintain regular contacts with all the Migdal Haemek schools, following up on all school related issues. Our SOS mothers are regular visitors at school during teacher's conferences and we are always emphasizing to the educational staffs in the various schools that we are available to deal with any need of our children. We continue to see progress made by our children in their various educational settings.

Our small zoo in the village is doing well; it was established last year with the help of our volunteers who cares for it all year round.

Our SOS day was celebrated on June 6th, it was highlighted by performances by the children and volunteers, the village was beautifully set up in the festive spirit of this special day. The children, mothers and all the village staff were very involved in the success of this event. The many guests and respected people were very excited to see all the happenings in the village. Many guests attended including some graduates from the village - We continue to strengthen our connection with our graduates who come to visit us, some with their families and serve as positive role as well as providing hope to our children. Certificates of merit were awarded to children for their positive change in their behavior and their contribution for the village community. It was exciting for all of us.

We continue to provide a wide range of free time activities in the village including Photography classes, many sports, music, arts and crafts, computers, English, makeup, theatre, hiking and many more. We also provide treatments such as therapeutic animal care and art therapy. Our girl's cosmetics group continues to be a big success and even some boys joined it lately.

Megadim now facilitates: 8 children's houses with 8 children in each house, 2 youth homes one of which is for graduates and a day care center. The village is in full capacity with 80 children that live in the different facilities.

Our therapeutic approach and hard work produce results. A big part of the children showed progress and improvement in their emotional- behavioral and social function. Through parent's guidance and a combined (child- parent) therapy, we can see an improvement in family relations in some of the children. For the very first time, these children experience success in areas that they failed at, in the past. They learn and discover their strengths and their abilities to progress and how to smile and enjoy. The children are exposed to different interests and gain a lot from them. They progress in their studies some even achieving excellence in the classroom which is a new and exciting experience for them. But most of all, the children receive their basic most right – to love and be loved.

Megadim has been supporting needy children, it will continue to provide a wonderful homey atmosphere full of dignity and love which allows the children to grow up normally and to prosper in life – all this thanks to your endless kind and generous help and support.

On behalf of the children allow me to thank you from the depths of my heart.
