HIV/AIDS is responsible for more than half of Zambia's 1.4 million orphans, and it is one of our key focuses here. We work in Lusaka and 3 other locations to provide medical treatment and ongoing support for families affected by the virus, as well as a loving home for children who cannot live with their families. … more about our charity work in Zambia

Unique partnership to reduce disease in Zambia

Nouvelle Soft have teamed up with SOS Children to fund a toilet and sanitation block in the school close to our SOS Children’s Village in Chipata in Zambia, which is currently under construction.

Watch a video (below) of the headmistress of the school describing how the facilities will improve the lives of the pupils studying there.

In Chipata, in the eastern province of Zambia, there is widespread poverty. HIV infection rates have risen and there is a particularly high rate of family breakdown and child abandonment. In the absence of a state education in the local area, parents have grouped together to fund and build a school to provide primary education for their children. The Damview Community Primary School is located on the edge of the SOS Children’s Village which is currently under construction and which, once complete, will provide a new home and a family for children without anyone to care for them.

The school currently has no electricity and only six classrooms for nearly 260 children. We will build six new classrooms, and when they are complete, the average class size will be 35, enabling children to get the individual attention they need.

Thanks to the support of Nouvelle Soft, flushing toilets will be installed in January 2012. As well as improving the environment for the children, the facilities will help to prevent diseases such as cholera, which are easily spread in unhygienic conditions. Edna Simwanzais, the Headmistress of The Damview School is certain that creating a comfortable environment will have a positive effect on children’s prospects for the future “Children are going to be exposed, for the very first time, to a toilet which they we will be flushing. We are so grateful” she says. Watch a video of Edna talking about the difference the facilities will make:

Elizabeth Tofaris, Communications Manager for SOS Children UK, says “Flushing toilets with proper drainage and clean water are an essential need for this school and Nouvelle’s sponsorship of the new sanitation facility will drastically improve hygiene and comfort for generations of pupils.”
