Child Sponsorship Report 2011, from Lumbini, Nepal

A child sponsorship report from Lumbini in Nepal. Written in 2011.

Dear Sponsor,

It is my great pleasure to let you know about the developments at your favorite SOS Children's Village Lumbini.

At present, there are 15 family houses with 123 Children in the village; 71 are boys and 52 are girls. 31 children are studying in the SOS Kindergarten Lumbini and 82 children are studying outside the Village in three different schools of the city.

The educational performance of the children at the end of this academic year is satisfactory. Our children are from very poor background and were weak in studies in the beginning. Comparing their background with their academic improvement, they have done good job. Some of our children passed with Distinction and the others did fine. Children are participating in a number of extracurricular activities like Taekwondo, Cricket, Football, etc.

Likewise, all the major festivals of the region like Lhosar (New Year Day), Holi( festivals of colors), Shivaratri (descent day of Lord Shiva), Chaitey Dashain (day of victory of God over devils), Christmas, Mother's day and Buddha Poornima (birthday of Lord Buddha) were celebrated with a lot of joy and happiness.

We organized an interaction program about the child right and child protection policy of SOS with the teachers from the schools where our children study. The program resulted very fruitful.

SOS Kindergarten Lumbini provides pre-primary education to the children of the village as well as the local community. The education curriculum is based on Montessori system of education. There are 53 children; 31 from village and rest from local community. Most of the children from community are scholars of SOS Children's Village Lumbini.

Regarding the health facility, the health of the children and the mothers in the Village is being taken care of by a doctor who normally visits once a week. The climate is very hot but the children are fine with good health. For recreation, during the summer vacation children were taken to different places. Children enjoyed seeing hills, dense forest and some holy places. Elder children enjoyed in boating.  A village picnic was held in January where children, mothers and staffs enjoyed in singing and dancing.

To mark the 25th International Day, SOS Children's Village Lumbini was celebrated organizing different program from 17th June, 2011 to 23rd June, 2011. Long race for girl children, balloon fight and spoon race for small children, fun sports for female and male staffs, Poomse Taekwondo championship, table-tennis, carrom-board, cricket for SOS children, and a district level inter-school sports quiz contest was organized in SOS Children's Village Lumbini and distributed prizes on the SOS day. Likewise, SOS Kindergarten Lumbini also organized different games to students and distributed prizes on the occasion of SOS day. A grand program on 22 June, 2011 was organized by SOS CV Lumbini. Formally the program was started with peace rally and a short program was organized by where a short welcome speech was presented by SOS child Ankit Verma. After that a welcome dance was presented by 10 SOS children. Along with all 13 new children were handed over to mothers in their respective houses.

This was a brief report on the current happenings and the condition of the SOS Children's Village Lumbini. Lastly, on behalf of our children, mothers, co-workers, we would like to thank you again for all your deeds for these needy children. Our efforts are becoming realistic only because of your continued support. We wish your support to shape our children's future on coming days.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

Vijay Jung Rana
