Child Sponsorship Report 2011, from Mbabane, Swaziland

A child sponsorship report from Mbabane in Swaziland. Written in 2011.

Dear Sponsors,

The Mbabane SOS Children’s Village again sends its warmest greetings to all friends, sponsors and supporters. This year began well with all children in good health. Even those who visited their relatives during the festive season were in a jovial mood as they share stories of their experiences in the community, especially those who were making their first time visits.

The village is currently a home to 166 children of which 38 are in the SOS Youth Homes.  By the end of last year 11 children were admitted into the village. They are happy as they are bonding well with their SOS mothers, brothers and sisters. Four youths were reintegrated to their families of origin as they had completed their Form 5 and they are currently waiting to enroll at tertiary level.  Under the Family Strengthening Programme we are taking care of 922 children.

The children performed exceptionally well last year as they were able to achieve 99% pass rate in Grade 7 and a 98% in Form 3. For those who sat for internal examination also did well though some had challenges.  There are 94 Children enrolled at the SOS Nursery, 14 of which are from the village, 19 from the Family Strengthening Programme and the rest from the neighboring community.

The clinic is continuing to provide primary health care to both community members and children at the village. The winter season has been very cold hence most children caught cold and flue but were taken care of by the clinic Nurse. The clinic has also been able to provide services such as: Immunization, Deworming, Growth Monitoring, Family Planning and Health Education meetings with children which helps them a lot as they discuss issues around hygiene and growing up.

The Family Strengthening Programme is doing well in supporting communities towards self reliance. It is currently operating in 5 communities; one of which has started to operate fully beginning of 2011. The communities have different types of income generating projects that are doing well.

Children, Mothers and all beneficiaries of SOS Children’s Village Mbabane are doing well especially because of all your support and love which we are very grateful for. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for all your contributions. Our organization is doing well in terms of child care due to your help. Once again the village children and staff take this opportunity to express their heartfelt gratitude to your support.
