Greetings from SOS Children’s Village Bhopal! We are once again inspired to convey our heartfelt gratitude to you for your continued support. We take this opportunity to inform you of the events & developments in the last six months.
Village Strength & Status:
As of date 244 children are under our care. 194 children are residing in the Village out of which 27 children are attending nursery, 118 are studying in different schools, 4 tiny tots are at home, 6 new children are attending preparatory classes, 21 are in university, 10 are pursuing professional/vocational courses and 8 girls are undergoing job training/apprenticeships.
In the past six months, 8 new children were brought home through Child Welfare Committee, and 1 child who was found to have no special needs was brought home from our special SOS Children’s Village Khajuri Kalan.
During the year children did well in academics. Our 147 school going children cleared the examination & moved to higher classes. The overall passing percentage of the village children reached 98%. Children performed well in 10th and 12th board examination also, one of our girl passed class 10th securing 80% marks.
Settlement of youths in mainstream society:
During the last 6 months, the village helped in the settlement of 2 girls through marriage which took place with traditional Indian cultural rituals and rites. Two of our youth completed Teacher’s Training Course, got selected as Teachers in renowned schools. Three girls took up jobs in famous Shopping Malls of Bhopal. One girl who passed General Nursing & Midwifery course from SOS Nursing School, Faridabad was selected as Nurse Trainee in a well-known MAX hospital in Delhi. Six of our youth, after completion of Technical courses got job placements in renowned industries of Madhya Pradesh.
Activities during the year:
In January, 60 children participated in a Painting Competition organized by Indian Oil Corporation. The theme of the competition was Save Energy.
To make full use of the summer vacations in May & June, several hobby classes & extra-curricular activities were organized, to develop & identify talents among children. Patrika group a leading Newspaper, organized various hobby classes; like dance, drawing, spoken English, personality development, fashion designing, aerobics, quick calculation skills, Salsa dance etc.
Various workshops and Enrichment programs for Mothers & children were organized during the last 6 months. In May Members of Samarth NGO organized a day long workshop in our Village on “AIDS Awareness /Prevention & Sex Education” for grown up girls. They also organized workshops for mothers & adolescents on “Parenting Skill”, Nutrition & “Adolescent age problems and solutions”. Another NGO organized a workshop on Child Rights & Child Protection for our Mothers & children.
Festivals, special days & functions:
Like every year this year also we celebrated the festivals like Holi, Mahashivratri etc. with full enthusiasm & devotion. On the occasion of Republic Day Celebration a Radio Channel 93.5 Red FM organized a programme namely “Ek Sham Desh Ke Nam”, in which our 2 children got opportunity to show their talent of singing in front of people of Bhopal City.
