Property Race Day 2011 raises valuable funds for education in Zambia

On 8th July 2011, the fifth annual Property Race Day took place at Ascot Racecourse. A hugely successful event, the day raised a fantastic £170,000 for four chosen charities, one of them SOS Children. The funds raised will be used towards our work with children and families in Chipata, a deprived town in Zambia’s eastern province.

An annual event, the fifth Property Race Day at Ascot was an enjoyable day of racing, networking and fundraising all in aid of four charities, including SOS Children.

Guests arrived at the event by a private train; with the now infamous Horse Mascot proving a popular attraction with the guests at Waterloo Station during the day. An auction hosted by Nick Nugent raised over £60,000 and saw some very special lots including an exclusive apartment onboard the world’s largest private cruise liner, The World, and a private dinner with Harry Redknapp.

Mike Slade, President of the Property Race Day, says: “The Property Race Day is a wonderful opportunity for our industry to come together for a great day’s racing, while raising money for charity. We are delighted to have raised in excess of £170k for our chosen charities.”

The Property Race Day has raised considerable sums for SOS Children’s work in Africa in the past. In 2007, SOS Children were delighted to receive a donation of £50,000, which helped to build a new Primary School close to SOS Children’s Village in Basse, The Gambia.

In 2010, following a sell-out event, the Property Race Day donated a further £50,000 for the construction of a family house at SOS Children’s Village Chipata in Zambia. Construction for the new Village here is currently underway.Property Race Day dinner 2011

This year, funds raised from the Property Race Day will again support our work in Chipata, used specifically to enable the vital extension of Damview, a local primary school close to the Village site. Once complete, this will provide three new classrooms. Further support will include electricity, water and sanitation facilities, the provision of teaching materials and capacity-building for teachers. These changes will give 120 children the opportunity to receive an education and have a chance of a better future. Caroline Cadman from SOS Children says “SOS Children is hugely grateful to the Property Race Day for its ongoing support which is helping to improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa through education.”
