Warmest greetings in behalf of the 141 children and youths together with 41 Mothers, Aunts and Co-workers of SOS Children’s Village Calbayog! I am pleased to inform you of the latest developments in the Children’s Village for the first semester of the year 2010.
Enhancing the talents and potentials of the children, a Children’s Choral and a Dance Group were formed. Initial audition was conducted last January 30 with the help of two volunteers from the local community and the Pedadogical/Educational Staff of the Children’s Village. The children were very eager to present their piece in the auditions. Most of them got their aspired parts and from then, enthusiastically joined practices for musical presentations.
The Children’s Choral then performed during a meeting of the entire Project and Village Directors of SOS Children's Villages Philippines done in the Children’s Village. The Choral beautifully sang the Philippine National Anthem and the SOS Prayer during the Welcome Programme for the Directors. Their original rendition of the SOS Prayer was very well applauded.
When summer vacation began in April, the children, mothers and co-workers held a wellness activity every Saturday morning. This was done to enhance everyone’s social and physical development while the children enjoyed vacation from school. Before the summer break ended in May, the whole family had its Annual Sports Festival. The event was enthusiastically and enjoyably participated by each team participated by Co-Workers, Mothers and all children and youths. The support and encouragement of each member in every team was overwhelming giving strength to each contestant in playing their games.
On the other hand, 335 family beneficiaries from the local community are continuously being served under the Family Strengthening Programme of the Children’s Village. Since 2007, we are extending our work with families through Family Strengthening Programmes by working with and for disadvantaged families to prevent crises that can, in the worst case scenario, lead to children being placed in out-of-home care. SOS Children's Villages offers various forms of support to strengthen families as much as possible so that they can once again manage their lives independently and care for their children. Here in SOS Calbayog, the Family Strengthening Programme staff continues training for the parents who are also members of the Palayamanan Working Group. This group was formed by the local government to teach farmers the modern ways of planting rice. SOS Calbayog partners with the government to sustain this initiative and monitor the effectiveness of the training for the beneficiaries.
Thank you very much for your continued support and generosity. Your unwavering enthusiasm and faith in the silent but fruitful works of SOS Children’s Villages particularly in Calbayog has kept us going in our efforts to better the lives of the underprivileged children in our society. May you and your family continuously be blessed with abundance in life.
With warm wishes and best regards,
Ms. Emily Torculas
