Helping families in Pakistan to rebuild their lives

It has now been over eight months since Pakistan was affected by devastating flooding. SOS are providing support to help families in the community to repair their homes and rebuild their lives.

In August 2010, the flooding in Pakistan created a large humanitarian disaster. Nearly 2,000 people lost their lives and 20 million were affected, surviving in a desperate situation after losing their property and their livelihoods.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, SOS Children initiated an Emergency Relief Programme which aimed to provide 100,000 food parcels, containing 16 million meals, as well as tents and medicines to those worst affected. SOS Children's Villages Pakistan also offered to provide a safe place to stay for any children who were orphaned or separated from their relatives by the disaster.

Now, SOS in Pakistan are helping families to repair and rebuild their demolished homes.

The district of Muzaffargarh in South-western Punjab has been identified as one of the areas with a significant and urgent need for assistance with the reconstruction of houses. Approximately 200,000 homes were damaged in the region, 130,000 of which were totally destroyed. To date, only about 15,000 homes have, or are in the process of being rebuilt with the help of the government and other NGOs in the local area. Many families have nowhere to stay and with their land destroyed by the rains, no means to earn a living or produce enough food for subsistence.

SOS Children will partner with other organisations to help 200 families to rebuild their homes from scratch. We will also assist families to carry out repairs to houses which have been damaged by the floods so that they can move back home and begin to return to some degree of normality.
