Children evacuated from SOS Village Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire

The situation in Côte d’Ivoire is becoming increasingly chaotic. Due to heavy fighting and prevailing insecurity in the surrounding area in Abidjan, children and young people have been evacuated to our SOS Children's Village Aboisso, further east in the country.

The city of Abidjan has seen heavy fighting between supporters of disputed President Laurent Gbagbo and those of his rival, Alassane Ouattara. Scores of people have been killed in violence since presidential elections in November. Recently, National Director Paul Gbato told us he was 'deeply frightened' about the situation on the ground: "Ever since the presidential elections, the people of Côte d'Ivoire have been hoping that the outcome would put an end to the conflict that has plagued the country since 2002. Unfortunately, things have taken a turn for the worse and the situation in Abobo is frightening."

Children, young people and staff from SOS Children's Village Abidjan have been evacuated to our other SOS Village in Côte d’Ivoire, in Aboisso, where the situation is much calmer. They will stay here until it is completely safe for them to return. Many people have died in post-election violence, and the rising violence raises concerns that the West African country could slip back into full-scale civil war. In 2002-03 fighting split the Ivory Coast between its north and south. It is feared that if the conflict restarted it would also destabilise fragile neighbouring countries such as Liberia.

SOS Children have been working in Côte d’Ivoire since 1969. At present there are two SOS Children's Villages in the country, two SOS Youth Homes, two SOS Nurseries, two SOS Schools, two SOS Social Centres and one SOS Medical Centre.
