HIV/AIDS is responsible for more than half of Zambia's 1.4 million orphans, and it is one of our key focuses here. We work in Lusaka and 3 other locations to provide medical treatment and ongoing support for families affected by the virus, as well as a loving home for children who cannot live with their families. … more about our charity work in Zambia

2011 Property Race Day supports new SOS Village in Chipata, Zambia

On Friday 8th July 2011, the fifth annual Property Race Day will take place at Ascot Racecourse, helping to raise valuable funds in support of our work in Chipata, a deprived town in Zambia’s eastern province, where one in every six children are orphans.

An exclusive chartered train will transport guests from Waterloo direct to Ascot and entertainment will include a steel band and a three-course lunch. Hosted by Mike Slade, President of the Property Race Day, an auction will take place with prizes including an exclusive apartment onboard the world’s largest private yacht. Mike says: “The Property Race Day is a fabulous opportunity for our industry to come together for a great day’s racing, while raising money for charity. We look forward to welcoming our regular and new race goers to Ascot in July for what guarantees to be another truly successful day.”

The Property Race Day has raised considerable sums for SOS Children’s work in Africa in the past. In 2007, SOS were delighted to receive a donation of £50,000, which helped to build a new Primary School close to SOS Children’s Village in Basse, The Gambia. The school now provides a valuable education to 195 pupils from the Children’s Village and the local community.

In 2010, following a sell-out event, the Property Race Day donated a further £50,000 for the construction of a family house at SOS Children’s Village Chipata in Zambia. Construction for the new Village here is currently underway. An SOS Family Strengthening Programme supporting local families in need to stay together is already in operation in the area. In addition to the Children’s Village, SOS are building a nursery school and a medical centre including a mobile medical unit, which will visit families in need of treatment unable to travel to the centre.

This year, the Property Students having fun - SL Lusaka, ZambiaRace Day will again support our work in Chipata. Funds will be used specifically to enable the vital extension of Damview, a local primary school close to the Village site. Once complete, this will provide three new classrooms. Further support will include electricity, water and sanitation facilities, the provision of teaching materials  and capacity-building for teachers. These changes will give 120 children the opportunity to receive an education and have a chance of a better future. Caroline Cadman from SOS Children says “SOS Children is hugely grateful to the Property Race Day for its ongoing support which is helping to improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa through education.”
