Indonesia

More than a decade on, families in Indonesia still live with the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. We opened three new Villages to care for children orphaned by the disaster. Today, we help families in eight locations provide a safe, stable upbringing for their children, and care for children with no-one else. … more about our charity work in Indonesia

A child sponsorship report from Banda Aceh in Indonesia. Written in 2010.

Dear Sponsor,

From the establishment in the year 2005 until now the SOS Children’s Village Banda Aceh accommodates 113 children. There are 50 boys and 50 girls living in the SOS Children’s Village and the other 13 elder boys are in the SOS Youth Home for Boys.  Apart from studying, the children have time for having fun, playing or doing various useful activities like sewing, cleaning up the village environment, reading books at the library, gardening, writing, painting, sports (taekwondo, volleyball, table tennis, badminton and football), dancing, playing traditional instruments called garbage music (music using unused things as instruments), electronics and having additional lessons for Math, English and computer.

During the recent holiday, the children got the chance to make an excursion to a beautiful beach quite far from the SOS Village. All children and the mothers had a very good time. Since the children had more holidays left, the educators already prepared some extra new activities for them, i.e. learning how to make handicrafts such as painting batik creations, embroidery and stitching. Several girls and boys who join cooking activity are busy making banana chips and very excited to create various flavours for their chips.

At the end of January four grade 9th students from the SOS Home for Boys represented their school for a Kite Art Competition. From the four teenage boys who participated in the competition, Helmi got the highest point because he was able to create a very big beautiful kite. He was proudly brought along a trophy and the kite home to be showed to his family and friends.

In order to introduce government agencies, offices, religious and cultural assets, the SOS-Village Banda Aceh organized a city tour for Nursery children using a carriage called Odong-odong. Accompanied by some educators and teachers the children travelled along the city. They were very excited and happy, even more so it was their first time riding the Odong-odong. They sang songs and chatted loudly all the long way and none of them got bored or sleepy.

We do thank you for your big support, with warm regards from all the children and staff of SOS Children’s Village Banda Aceh...

Yours sincerely,
