A child sponsorship report from Limón, Costa Rica. Written in 2010.

Please note: This report may have been written by someone whose first language is not English.  We have left it largely unedited, as this is how a sponsor would receive it.

Dear sponsor,

In order to accomplish the development of each of the children, teenagers of the families that reside in the Limon Children Villages, everyday the SOS Mothers and Village collaborators will help on different areas: family, education, technical formation, health, sports, and recreation areas.

On the other hand, we also give formation processes to SOS Mothers and we attempt that each family will count with the infrastructure and equipment they need for their adequate development.

For this, here are the main activities and achievements made in such areas:

Family Life Area:

In the Limon Children Villages there are currently 12 families which have in total 92 children and teenagers with ages from 2 to 22 years old which are in charge of SOS Mothers and two affective aunts.

Since we are using the maximum capacity in the first semester of 2010, there has been no welcoming of new children to SOS Families, although the independence processes of some youths, there has also been some transfers from the Children Villages Tres Rios to the Children Villages Limon.

In the Children Villages, the family integration processes are very important, the development of sense of belonging and of family identity for the children. This is why each of the families will organize frequently some activities that will help to strengthen these aspects. In each one of the families, the children are integrated in an adequate way, each time with a stronger sense of belonging. The families that made up the Village have managed to develop a sense of family, sharing traditions, coexistence, relationships and sharing a story in common.

During school holidays (December 2009 to January 2010), Easter Week and on weekends, the families organize trips to different places inside the province. They may for example made one day visits or camp for several days to nearby rives such as Bardilal or La Bomba, national parks such as Cahuita or beaches such as Cieneguita or Playa Bonita, among many others.

Some of the children visit the biological families of their affective mothers, strengthening the bond with this and expanding their social life.

On the other hand, on special dates such as birthdays or graduations, each affective mother will prepare a lunch, dinner or some trip or special party for the child, where all of the family participates, and some classmates or friends of the child are invited. In some families the siblings in the house will make or buy a present to the child that is celebrating his or her birthday.

Academic Area:

In this school year, 2010, we can mention that a total of 83 children and teenagers are currently on preschool, elementary school, high school or university. The performance of the children is regular. Some of the children of our Village are some of the best grades of their schools.

Currently we have 5 young men and women who are studying some technical formation such as cooling, English, beauty school, among other according to their abilities and interests, only one young man is working now formally.

Because of the remoteness of the zone of Limon form the capital city of the country, there is a poor offer for Technical Formation Centres, so there has been some difficulty to bring different choices for the Mothers so their children will receive this education, but nevertheless, we are always looking to establish alliances or agreements with institutions or companies that can answer our need.

Health Area:

In regards to health, each of the children and the teenagers, are taken periodically by their affective mother to have a general check up with a Doctor, and in case of requirement, such as orthodontics, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, psychology, psychiatry or homeopathy, among others according to the children’s need.

Mother Development:

For the SOS Children Villages, the Mothers are of great importance and to give them the theoretical tools and practices that will help perform a better role mother.

On the other hand three Mothers have concluded their formation process and are doing their final practice in which they practice the acquired knowledge so they can get their Educated Mother Degree.
It is important to mention that professionals in the area of psychology and social workers bring constant support to the Mothers according to their needs and the needs of their families.

We are very happy to have been able to share through you through this letter the activities made and the results obtained during the first semester of the year 2010 in the SOS Children Villages Limon. We wish that you feel proud like us of contributing that more boys, girls and teenagers can grow under the love and protection of a family.

Thanking you again for the support given by you, sincerely
