We focus on how we prepare them for this through our pioneering Youth Homes and Vocational Training Centres. We hear from those who reflect on their time spent with us; and how the support and care they have received has helped them become happy, well-rounded adults.
Since SOS Children’s Villages began in 1949, our mission has been to give orphaned and abandoned children the love and security they need for a happy, positive childhood. We do this by providing children with a mother, a family, and a home within the safe community of an SOS Village. We are also fully committed to preparing our children for life as independent young adults. We believe that our children should be properly prepared for life outside the SOS Village, and receive the aftercare and support they need.
We have years of experience in preparing and guiding children through the critical phase between childhood and adulthood. This phase can be challenging for any young person, especially for those leaving care. They need emotional support as well as practical day-to-day skills to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Our aim is to help them shape their own futures, and ensure they receive the education and skills they need to become successful members of society.
We know that the love and trust we give them throughout their childhood forms a solid foundation on which they can build their lives, so the help of their SOS mother and family is vital. We also support our young people by providing vocational training; by supporting them through their university studies; by providing counselling services and by preparing them with semi-independent living arrangements. For the young adults who leave our care, their connection with SOS does not end there. Our young people form bonds with their SOS family that last a lifetime; and are welcomed back to the Village at all times, especially during holidays and at special events. SOS mothers are always on hand to listen, support and guide, and never stop being ‘Mum’, no matter what stage of life they’re at!
