A child sponsorship report from Visakhapatnam in India. Written in 2009.

Dear Sponsor,

It is a great pleasure to greet you again as a valuable and important member of our world-wide family whose kind support helps us to provide a better environment to SOS Children’s Village - Visakhapatnam.  So, we are very happy to share with you the recent developments that took place in SOS Children’s Village – Visakhapatnam. SOS Children’s Village – Visakhapatnam completed 12 years of service to the needy children in the State of Andhra Pradesh. During these eventful decades we brought home a total number of 242 needy children.  Today 192 children are happily living in 14 family houses under the loving care of mothers, of which 66 boys, 126 girls. 76 youngsters are at SOS Youth Facility located in the city.  All our efforts are becoming a reality only because of your continued support and faith in our work.

Bringing home children:

From January to June 2009, we brought home 5 children (1 boy and 4 girls) the all are happily adjusted in SOS family home. 


Achievements in academics for the mid-year was very encouraging and promising. Overall Children’s Village progress is 96%. All children who wrote their annual examinations have been promoted with good marks. Many children got 80% and above aggregate. As part of our positive reinforcement good performers were appreciated and treasured with prizes in the village function.  We also feel proud to inform you that five of our girls doing B.Sc. Nursing degree course in the reputed Colleges like “Apollo Nursing College”, Tirumala Nursing college, manisha College of Nursing, Skey college of Nursing and NRI Nursing College. In the class 10th exams and intermediate exams results were source of strength. Out of 23, 18 children secured first class marks and remaining secured 2nd class. Those who passed out in the board exams attended career counseling. After the counseling, children preferred to join M.A. 5 years Integrated courses, BBM, B.Com Computers, Tally accounts (computers), and basic science degree courses. Some of them have joined higher courses according to their choices and some as per counseling choice. One girl achieved 60% marks in first year Law examinations.


Kid power team visited our SOS Visakhapatnam and conducts our children were 2 workshop on safety skills. Topics included protection from child abuse, Exploitation, and measures to curtail such incidents. Our children have benefited from the program.

Summer Camp was started and entire month all children were busy in different co-curricular activities like drawing, painting, craft, dance, music, yoga, meditation, games sports.  Few grownup children attended carrier guidance for different age groups.  Smaller and new children were provided with basics in English, Telugu and Math. Routine ENT, Dental and general checkup was done for all children.  This program was organized by Lions Club, Viskhapatnam.  Entire Village went to Zoo Park and MGM park, for a day as a part of summer activity.  All children enjoyed the day. Some of girls also participated in Dance Competition which was organized by Satya Sai Samithi. This summer vacation we arranged for a dance teacher to enable interested children to learn dance. Previously some of our children have performed dances in their schools and local programs. There was dance participation program organized by LOCAL Channel (Telugu) through out other NGO’s in Andhra Pradesh and only 5 children were selected from SOS Children’s Village – Viskhapatnam.  This program is called ‘JAGADAM’. 

Youth Facility: 

Result has been declared and 80% of youngster had achieved with “A” grade. 6 of elder boys started working in reputed companies at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. In this academic year one of our youth P. Rajesh successfully completed his B. Tech Civil Engineering at Pyada College with first class marks. In the class 10th exams and intermediate exams boys achieved 90% results and few of them are planning to join in engineering. Some of boys who are having 3 month summer vacation started summer job in 3 star hotels, bakeries, BPO’s etc. Other boys are attending career workshop, summer camp, Spoken English Classes, Computer literacy programme, Essay writing competitions, quiz competition. All youngsters went for 2 days picnic Aruku Valley, Borra Caves one of the popular hill stations of the Andhra Pradesh.  Two of youngsters are working Whipt & Son Pvt ltd. and 1 at Millennium Softwares, 2 are Vijay Nirman Company and 1 is working for Optimal Engineering as apprenticeship trainee at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.

Community Programme:

In tune with the objective of reaching out to more needy children, we also cater to the Family Strengthening Program, and tend to the requirement of neighboring community.  350 children through 207 families benefit through SOS-FSP. Earlier due to poverty many of these children dropped out of school, but with the consistent support from SOS, regular schooling, clean and regular health checkup to all children were ensured.  “Rajiv Arogyasree” Health cards through Government Hospital were provided and 198 mothers had been taken Life Insurance Corporation of Ltd. called “Abhayajeevan” Policy. Training with ICDS Department & Andhra University, on nutrition & Teenagers were organised. Proposal to take part Income generating training Programme by Co-workers on Capacity building of our program participants Technical support given by JSS & Rural Employment Guarantee program. Co-ordinated with VIKASA NGO to facilitate SHG & Micro finance concept. Health camp conducted by Vikasa NGO SOS coordinated and informed to FSP mothers and children.
