A child sponsorship report from Meru in Kenya. Written in 2009.

Dear Sponsor,

It is said that “Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.” This certainly has been true for us who watch over many children as they grow.  They bring joy to our environment, teach us how to be true friends and to love one another despite the situation. We have also learnt that good life is not only guided by knowledge and inspired by accomplishments made but also by the everyday challenges we succeed to overcome.

Another year is coming to an end. It has been filled with joys, successes and challenges but that did not deter us from achieving our objectives for the year. SOS Children’s Village Meru is proud to have 120 children under its care. To make children’s life more interesting, purposeful and to promote their development, a lot of activities and events have been organized within the village.

Global Peace Games

The children participated in the global peace games which was an opportunity for them to learn their central role in the mission of global friendship and peace in the world. The event featured friendly soccer matches for both boys and girls. The games also sought to develop the leadership skills and individual responsibility of children and help and them learn how through sports and ordinary life action and decision, they can make the world a better place for all. The SOS mothers also took part by giving a talk to the children on the importance of keeping peace and preserving life to the children.

SOS Nursery School

The SOS Nursery is attended by children from the community as well as the SOS Children’s Village.  This is a place which is never quiet; one can hear children laughing, playing, singing and sometimes crying. It is interesting to watch how they easily forget and are in a happy mood again.  The SOS Nursery held its cultural day for the purpose of teaching and sharing cultural values to the children. Included were the culture artifacts for the children and parents to learn from. The children and visiting youth joined the SOS Nursery children in entertaining guests with songs, skits, plays and poems with the message of the days theme, “An Africa fit for an African Child’’.

Academic performance

We currently have 109 children in both the primary school and the SOS Nursery.  They have had a wonderful year posting good results in both their internal and external examinations. In co-curricular activities the children have participated in SOS Fun day, camping and sports.  All these are towards helping the children demonstrate their skills and talents with a lesson to learn. Achievements have been recognized through award and prize giving.

On behalf of the Children, SOS Mothers, and co-workers, We are wishing you a Merry Christmas, a prosperous and happy new year.

Yours sincerely,

Gladys Mumbi,
Sponsorship Coordinator.
