Dear Friend,

Greetings from SOS Family Latur

The Village

Once again it is time to share the developments in SOS Children’s Village, Latur. We have experienced a few welcome showers and the temperature is not as high as in northern parts of the country.  These showers have given green colours to the tall trees & hedges, red Gulmohar flowers and yellow golden showers are in full bloom. The showers have attracted a group of peacocks. During the evening time when clouds gather a group of Peacocks dance with their beautiful feathers spread in mini forest behind family houses before the rainfall.

Presently there are 123 children in the village, 45 boys and 78 girls, 17 new children were brought home.  They are adjusting very well in their new environment. Four girls joined Girls Facility, Pune for higher studies. Four boys shifted to the youth facilities at Latur and Aurangabad making the total number to 30.

98% of school going children passed their annual school examination and were promoted to the next higher classes. The new academic session started form 5th June. Four girls have applied for nursing courses this year; one girl is admitted in Pune University for Master degree in Social Work, one boy is doing XII th Science through CBSE from SOS School Bhimtal. Three girls are doing Bachelor degree in Commerce. Lord Ganesha idol’s are installed and worshipped for ten days.

SOS Learning Centre

An SOS Learning Centre was constructed and equipped with the financial support from Life Insurance Corporation of India. It has a well-equipped computer centre, a library and a music room. The learning centre was inaugurated on 9th September.’ Our children presented colourful cultural programmes of songs & dances on the occasion by all. This new facility will go a long way in educational & personality development of not only our children but also those under Family Strengthening Programme.

Extracurricular activities

Three of our children have also done very well in sports. One of them participated in special National games held in southern state of Pondichery. Her team won second position in Basketball competitions and obtained certificates and a silver medal. One of our boy was selected as captain of the state football team to participate in special National Games held in Calcutta. The team received silver medal and certificate; one girl won prizes in shot put and running event. One more girl participated in National youth Festival held in Amritsar, Punjab.

All the children have been immunized in our SOS Medical Centre.

A Medical camp was organized for dental check up and blood HB of all the children was tested and a few with low HB were put on special diet as per doctors advice. Mosquito eradication measures were taken in co-operation with local Government authorities. Water testing & purification was also organized. Thorough medical check up of all the newly brought children was done and necessary treatment & medicine given as per requirement.

All these were made possible because of cooperation of many people who care for the children. We appreciate your continued support, which goes a long way in providing for the needy children.

We pray for good health and well being off your near and dear ones.

Yours at SOS Children’s Village,
