A child sponsorship report from Tacloban in the Philippines. Written in 2009.

Dear Friend,

The year 2009 has opened another phase for SOS Children’s Village Tacloban as it continues to tailor developmental opportunities to our 119 children and youths.   It was indeed a fruitful start for the whole family with activities laid out the first half of the year. Allow us to inform you on how it unfolded.

SOS Tacloban had a good start for the year 2009 with the successful program, the SOS Sponsors’ Day last January 31. This is an annual activity to thank local friends and sponsors of their continued support. Then for the graduation month of March, more than 20 graduated in the pre-elementary, Elementary and High School. Other important activities included a two-day Career Guidance Orientation Seminar conducted last March 1 and 2 attended by youth girls and the Lenten Season Recollection of staff at Sto. Niño Church.

Launching of the 1-year celebration of SOS Tacloban’s 40th Anniversary was conducted last May 9. The 3rd Fun Ride and Press conference were implemented as kick-off activities.  These were preceded with a Thanksgiving Mass on May 8.  Recognition of graduates and awardees was done also during the month of May.

Meanwhile, the May Summer Sports Fest involved competitions in cheer dance, ball games, indoor games, and parlor games happened, participated by the three groups composed of mothers, aunts, co-workers, children and youths. Next, a program highlighting singing, token-giving and dancing was rendered by the children in honor of their mothers, and an exclusive beach party was conducted by the mothers themselves in order to celebrate Mothers’ Day. Then, the Santacruzan, which was started on May 1, was culminated on the 30th with simple snacks after the prayer and participation in the Parish procession on the 31st.  Lastly, the yearly family outing was held at Glorites Beach Resort, Brgy. San Antonio, Basey Samar.

In behalf of the whole SOS Tacloban family, our sincerest gratitude for your continuing support! We also wish that every child under our care will always be blessed with humility and grateful heart to all the people who made a better place for them – just like what you did for our SOS family!

With warm wishes and best regards,

Oscar Garol
