A child sponsorship report from San Vicente in El Salvador. Written in 2009.

Dear Friends,

Have a warm greeting from El Salvador one more time, specifically from the children of the SOS Children’s Village San Vicente. We hope you can know more about the lives of the different families of the village after reading this information.

We currently have 132 children and young people between the ages 2 to 18 years. For this year, the programme has not been receiving new boys and girls, as well as nor has there been children or young people who leave the programme. This situation has allowed the time needed to work in the integration and strengthening of emotional ties between families and the community. We want to share with you that right now we have a new village director for San Vicente, she is Rosa Mélida and she is currently in her process of training before taking the entire responsibility of the village.

At this moment we don’t have planned the construction of a new home, only the enlargement of the infrastructure of home 13 since it needs to be bigger so that the boys and girls of that family are more comfortable.

We want to share with you that in the Family Strengthening Programme 10 Committees of Families have been organized and are being trained for the achievement of the sustainability of the programmes through the elaboration and implementation of a plan to strengthen its operation. We have also coordinated with local governments the implementation of vocational workshops aimed at women who have boys and girls in the programmes, taking currently 4 workshops in implementation: clothing, cooking, cosmetology and bakery; counting with an assistance of 9 mothers whose children are being attended in the Community Centre San Jose Guayabal.

With the families that are participating in the Family Strengthening Programme we have worked two themes, women and leadership, and rights of the children, training 133 families. With the boys and girls we are working the area of preventive health care, for which it has coordinated with the health units, medical teams, immunization days, controls of healthy children and we follow carefully the nutritional status of 300 boys and girls.

We are now attending 300 boys and girls, 144 families including the SOS Social Centre, which assists 13 communities in a situation of vulnerability. We are pleased to tell you that the lives of many of these families we attend have improved dramatically thanks to the programme. Nora Patricia, mother of a child and a girl, who attend to the Community Home New day of Cocobano Community in San Rafael Cedros city, is now part of the Committee of family and of the women's Committee of the community. Nora Patricia, together with other women in the community, has a farm of 500 laying hens that are financed by a non-governmental organization, and she is the one who manages the project; the fact that she has her daughter in the programme allows Nora to effectively carry out their work on the farm throughout the day.

This year we had a very important event for our boys and girls in the village, we had a gathering with the biological families of our boys and girls. This gathering was a success and the biological families heard some topics for discussion and took the opportunity to share a day with their boys and girls. For the children it was also a very special day in which they were able to share with their biological families something of their lives in the village. They were very excited before, during and after the event, it will certainly be an event that they will always remember.

This is what we can tell you at the moment, we hope you enjoyed reading and knowing more about our children in the village. We want to thank you again for giving us the opportunity to provide all our children and youths a family with love, respect and security.  With your help and support we can make all this possible. Once again, thank you very much. May God bless you always.

Yours sincerely,

Vanessa María Carballo Bolaños
