A child sponsorship report from Khulna in Bangladesh. Written in 2009.

Dear friends,

Another precious year from our life is going to be over. We have been trying our level best to renew our commitment to the children entrusted to us. Of course you will like the following information on SOS Children's Village Khulna on the eve of Merry Christmas 2009 and Happy New Year 2010. We are confident and hopeful in getting same type of cooperation and support from you in the years to come.

We have 78 boys and 94 girls in different family houses. Moreover, 52 youths live in SOS Youth Home Khulna and attends different educational institutions and prepare themselves for higher education and job oriented vocational training. This year 3 girls and 4 boys have passed Secondary School Certificate examination obtaining grade point A of which one girl got GPA 5.00 out of scale 5.00 in Business Studies. One girl and 2 boys have passed Higher Secondary Certificate examination. One of our elder boys has gone to United Kingdom for pursuing Post-Graduation who successfully completed 4-year Honour’s Graduation major in Sociology from the Dhaka University. Another 3 young boys and 2 girls are studying Graduation course in Universities. During the last 12 months we have solemnized marriage for 4 girls and 2 boys who now live independently with their spouses. We have helped providing employment for 2 girls and 11 boys during this time.  So far, 93 boys and 77 girls have been settled in the society through employment and marriage who occasionally visits their respective family-houses with their spouses and children.

Other than Farm mechanism, electrical and welding training has been included at SOS Youth Village Farm Project Bagerhat. Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) is the second community based service of our organization. SOS Social Centre Khulna has been supporting 500 Children from 327 families under Family Strengthening Programme. To celebrate our founder President Prof. Hermann Gmeiner's birthday (23rd June), International SOS Children's Village Day was observed in SOS Children’s Village and its ancillary projects. Appraisal ceremony in SOS Children’s Village was held for best performing children on different talents. SOS School arranged different competitions and exhibitions. SOS Social Centre also celebrated for the poor children of the neighbouring community. Our 4 Children received Award of Hermann Gmeiner Scholarship. To celebrate Bengali New Year, our children took part in cultural programme, decorated them in traditional Bengali colouful dresses. One mother has been honoured by our President Mr. Helmut Kutin with SOS-Ring, for her long service with devotion.
