A child sponsorship report from Mopti in Mali. Written in 2009.

Dear sponsors,

It is a great pleasure for me to give you the last news relating to the Children that you sponsor.

The S.O.S Children Village of Socoura-Mopti currently hosts a hundred and thirty four (134) Children including seventy-two (72) Boys and sixty -two (62) Girls divided into fourteen family homes.

Indeed, last year twenty-three Children left for studies and training reasons. To replace these Children, twenty-five others were allowed thus, it remains officially six (06) free places.

October 5th was the effective resuming of classes in all Primary Schools and Colleges all over the Malian territory. Thus, ninety-eight S.O.S Children happily started going school again. There are fifteen newly registered.

This year, we have nine 9 candidates including 3 boys and 6 Girls for the C.E.P (Certificate of Primary School Leaving) or the college entry examination and 7 candidates 5 Boys and 2 girls for the D.E.F (Junior High Secondary School Leaving Certificate).

There are 222 Children at the S.O.S Nursery divided into three 3 sections among them are12 S.O.S Children.

In addition, on October 13th, 2008, the Village celebrated the World Games for Peace 2008 Edition on the public ground "Hambodedjo" of Sévaré with the partners of the Children and the community. A big football match and a cultural event were organized; more than a thousand Children and young people took part in it before all the local authorities.

On November 3rd, the Village was honored to welcome a French Charity organization called "Association 4L" which offered the Children an important set of toys and clothes.

November 19th and 20th, 2008, respectively the "World Children’s Day" and the "International Day against Children’s Maltreatment" were celebrated in collaboration with the nursery, the Family Reinforcement Program (P.R.F) and the SOS School. The ceremonies were chaired by the Representative of the Regional Head Office of the Women, Children and Family.  The parents of the PRF villages Children, those of the Nursery Children, Teachers, Educators, S.O.S Mothers and Aunts, and Directors attended the ceremony. These two days were an opportunity for the Children to speak out their rights through a sketch presented by the S.O.S Nursery and also on the National Radio. Therefore, the policy of Child protection was widely broadcast.

Also on December 25th, 2008 the Nursery brilliantly took part in the week of the Child in Bamako.  It ranked first; it received from the first Lady of the country a significant set of toys and teaching materials.

Also, the village was honored to be the second institution to which the young Rotarians club of Mopti thought of on February 2nd, 2009. Thus, the club gave the Children of the village toys and a set of clothes.

March started with the stay of the Magic Villages delegation. Unlike the previous years, in addition to film shows, from 2nd to 4th March were organized stands of village fairs and various workshops.  That was a good opportunity to give the delegation the privilege to inaugurate the new gallery of the socio-educational activities of the village.  From now on it bears the name of AWA DIALLO and contains some BOGOLAN products (traditional printing technique of fabric), of dyed materials made by children during their free times.  The objective of the gallery is to encourage and give value to manual work.

In addition, from the 1st to 14th April our country experienced the 4th General Census of the Population and Habitat (R.G.P.H) and the 14 Family Houses of the Village were listed.

Finally, the Village was honored to house the day of 15 May the  International Day of Families organized by the Regional Head Office of  the Promotion of  Women,  Children and Family with the topic: Mothers and Families:  Challenges in a changing world.

On behalf of the Children of all our villages of joy which you sponsor, we would like to express our gratitude and thank you very much dear Sponsors.

THE DIRECTOR-FATHER
