It gives us immense pleasure to present before the bouquet of happening for this year. All the children, mothers and staff convey season’s greetings to you and all your dear ones. Greenfields is located in Haryana province on the Southern Outskirts of Delhi. Being in a national capital region it has good telecommunication, transportation, education, employment opportunities and medical facility available.
This is the first SOS Children Village, established in India in 1964 and dedicated on January 22, 1970. SOS Greenfield’s has completed 45 glorious years of dedicated services to the children in need. During the year 2009, 14 children (11 girls and 3 boys) have been brought home. There are 220 children (74 boys and 124 girls) are staying in different family houses in the village out of which 22 (8 boys and 14 girls) among them are staying in boarding schools and hostels.
The village is having 20 family homes along with a kitchen garden, dispensary, nursery, duck pond, mini zoo and two playgrounds. In addition to this the village also has a community hall, retired mother’s home and a learning centre. The learning centre comprises of a computer laboratory, library and a music room. The children take maximum benefit of the facilities available inside the village as well as the neighborhood. SOS Children’s village has entered in a partnership with Coco Cola India for the conservation and sustainability of resources to ensure a better quality of life for our children. Mr. Atul Singh, President and CEO of Coco Cola and their team visited our village for the foundation stone laying ceremony. They planted trees of different type of fruits. After that they inaugurated the project – Rain Water Harvesting. Now the work of the rain water harvesting has completed.
39 children are studying in village nursery. Two teachers teach them through play way method with the help of pictures, audio visual aids, computer, charts, flash cards and books. Apart from classes creative activities like painting, crafts, dance and poetry recitation are organized for children. 20 children from nursery joined different schools after their passing out.
In the sphere of education the children have done quite well. The total number of children appeared in the examination were 143 out of which 6 detained. In class XII examination, 8 children had appeared out of which 5 got 1st division, two of them got 2nd division while one got compartment and reappeared for the same. Out of 5 children in class X, 4 children passed with good marks and one got compartment in one subject. Those who have passed class XII examination have joined different colleges and institutes for courses in Hotel Management, Business Management and Fashion Designing.
Health being an important aspect in our life is always high on the priority list. All the children of our village are medically insured. The Medical camps were organized for all the children and mothers. A team of doctors organized a medical camp for mothers and grown-up girls on their health issues. Eyes check-up camp was organized for village children. The general health condition of the children of the village is satisfactory.
To enhance the skill and knowledge of children, the village organized a workshop on career guidance, child rights, sex education for grown up girls meditation programme. A workshop was also organized on life skill . Three days workshop on Child Rights for Northern Region was organized in the village. 90 participants, including mothers and children from 09 villages, took part in the said workshop. 06 children from the village participated in 3 km marathon named “Run to Save the Girl child” organized by MVN School to highlight the plight of girl child in the state.
We organized a meditation workshop for 6 days for the village children before the annual examinations to make them stress free and total awakening of brain which was organized by Satya Foundation. 44 children and 3 co-workers participated in the program. A computer literacy programme was organized by Arvato, a corporate group, this program was for about 40 days, at the end of which Microsoft certificates were awarded to all students. The grown up children of class X, XIIth and graduation participated in Shandar Technology, a corporate group for exposure.
The village celebrates all major national festivals and other important days with full enthusiasm. The festival of color Holi was celebrated with lot of joy and happiness. On the occasion of Rakshabandhan children went to Janpath, New Delhi for tying rakhi to Smt. Pratibha Patil, The President of India, Shri Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India and Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Congress President.
Two girls have brought laurels for the village by winning the Central Board of Secondary Education, District Sahodaya Basketball Championship 2008 for their school and retained the Glittering Trophy that we had won last year (2007) too. However the summer days were too hot and the village organized one day picnic in Water Park at “Splash Water Park”. During vacation, different activities were organized including watching movie, basket ball match, football match, cricket match and competition of song, dance, drawing and painting. The grand and beautiful Akshardham temple was chosen for this year’s Village picnic.
SOS Youth Facility
The village youth are doing well in three youth facilities. At present 37 youth staying in two youth facilities and looked after by two of our Educational Co-workers. 18 grown up girls are staying in Girls facility and looked after by one of our lady co-worker education. One of our youths is doing Engineering, 5 of our grown up girls are doing graduation, 3 girls and 4 boys are doing Hotel Management, 3 girls are perusing Fashion Designing course, 1 of our girls is doing Masters in Business Administration and another one is doing Masters in Computer Application. 1 girl and a youth are doing BBA and 1 youth is doing degree course in Journalism and Mass Communication, 1 girl is doing degree course in Travel and Tourism. All the youths are perusing their higher education from reputed institutes. 3 young boys and 10 girls were able to find a job and are happy with their profession. This year 7 girls tied the nuptial knots. They are all happy and well settled.
Family Strengthening Programme
Once again we have started our FSP programme from 1st September 2009. The Village is reaching out to vulnerable children and mothers of the community through Family Strengthening Program. The main objective of the program is to prevent child abandonment. The Village has extended this program to the rural areas and covered 188 children which constitutes of 83 women and single headed families in 12 villages. Through this program we are providing need based support to beneficiaries in six packages of services, like basic education, nutrition support to needy children, comprehensive health services through ABLE Hospital, Psychological Social Support, Child Right Protection, Capacity Building, and Community development through families. During the year 2008, three children passed their 6 months of course in retail management from Indian Institute of Job Oriented Training, Faridabad and got the job in Delhi and Faridabad. One of our children has passed his 2nd year of Diploma in Computer Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Loharu, Bhiwani. One of the girl’s of Atohan village, an orphan child has been awarded scholarship by Rai Foundation for her study up to Masters in Business Administration. All our Children have been upgraded to the next standard with good grades.
As far as livelihood is concerned 6 of our beneficiaries are working in nearby factories, 4 are working as nursery teachers and one as helper in different schools because of our efforts. To develop saving habits in beneficiaries, we encourage them to link with Self Help Group resulting in 4 Functional groups and another one is in formation position, 48 mothers are active member of Self Help Group. To ensure smooth operation of Self Help Group, workshop to sharpen the skills in Documentation and income generation is being done through local NGO’s help. One of our Self Help Group named “Shree Krishna Self Help Group Aurangabad” has received a loan amount of rupees 70,000 to meet their immediate needs of livelihood development while other groups are using their full amount of savings in inter loans. We are working in association with District Horticulture Office to ensure maximum support of Government for installation of mushroom production units for self help group beneficiaries.
