A child sponsorship report from Chittagong in Bangladesh. Written in 2009.

Dear friends,

Another precious year from our life is going to be over. We have been trying our level best to renew our commitment to the children entrusted to us. Of course you will like the following information on SOS Children's Village Chittagong on the eve of Merry Christmas 2009 and Happy New Year 2010. We are confident and hopeful in getting same type of cooperation and support from you in the years to come.

SOS Children’s Village Chittagong is giving support to 138 children: 53 boys and 85 girls, among them 120 are living in the Village and the rest 18 are residing at boarding houses for studies and job training. We have admitted 13 new children during the year. SOS Youth Village Chittagong is continuing care and guidance for 48 boys. During the year, 2 boys and girls have been married. Our 7 boys and girls passed the Secondary School Certificate examination 2009.  Four of our girls have admitted themselves in Bachelor of Honours Course; one of our girls has admitted her in Diploma-in-Nursing course. Now, 30 students are receiving training from SOS Vocational Training Centre Chittagong. There are 263 students at SOS School Chittagong. The Day Care Centre at Social Centre takes care of 60 children.

A Pitha (home made cake of powdered rice) Festival was held on 1 January to celebrate the English New Year. To celebrate the Foundation Day of SOS Children’s Village Chittagong, an Open Drawing Competition and discussion was held in January. Annual Picnic was held in January. International Mother Language Day was celebrated on the 21st February. To observe the International Women’s Day, a Film show on Women’s Empower, Women’s Rights & Safe Motherhood was shown on 8 March. In observance of Independence Day, an Open Drawing Competition was held on 26 March. To celebrate the Bengali New Year, a cultural function was held on 14 April.  International Mothers’ Day was celebrated on 10 May. Teachers Gathering was held in May. To celebrate the International SOS Children’s Village Day 2009 a eight day long programme i.e. Open Art Competition, Sports Competition, Cultural Competition, Social Awareness programme, General Knowledge, Extempore Speech, Get - together of former SOS Children and Elder Children Party were held. The Concluding Ceremony was held on 27 June, Honourable Minister for Shipping of Bangladesh Govt. was present as chief guest. Child Protection Workshop in July was participated by 31 children. Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Division, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong and Deputy Director of Social Services Department, Chittagong visited our Village on different occasions.
