Greetings from SOS Children’s Village, Bhopal!
Its again time to wish you and your family a very happy and prosperous New Year. May this year bring many opportunities your way to explore every joy of life and all your efforts into great achievements. We are very grateful for your patronage. We always endeavor to provide our children with better and better amenities and opportunities to secure their future. On behalf of SOS Children’s Village Bhopal, I would like to thank you for supporting. We could have not achieved this humanitarian feat without your unwavering support.
The village comprises of 16 family houses. Our village includes community house, village dispensary, primary school, tailoring center, library, a temple, youth house, gymnasium and a FIFA football ground which is used for children for playing, various activities, events conducted in the village and also Global Peace Games, a friendly football match for under 14 age group is organised every year. As a special donation SOS Bhopal received a computer system for our children, which the children learn during holidays. Also Coca Cola supported for Rain Water Harvesting in village to store the rain water. This will meet the additional requirement of water in the village during summer season and also expected to recharge the ground water level in the village.
Strength of Primary School is 311, including the children of village as well as of outside community. This year the result as per the academic record was 100%. 28 students were granted scholarship for the academic session 2008-09. During the year the school organized many competitions, awareness and cultural programmes.
As we are stepping ahead into another year we would like to glimpse of our achievements of the current year. During the year 18 new children were embraced home for permanent care and that makes strength 245 (109 boys and 136 girls) of our SOS family. 193 children are staying in village and 52 youth in Youth Facility. Out of 193 children of village 144 children are going to different schools, 17 girls are attending university among them 1 girl is doing MCA, a girl is doing Master in Mass Communication, 2 girls are doing B.Sc. Nursing from Apollo College of Nursing Hyderabad, 2 girls are doing Bachelor of Computer Application, 1 girl is doing B.Sc. in Biotechnology, 3 girls are doing B.Com and 7 girls are doing BA , 12 girls are attending professional courses like Diploma in Architecture, Primary Teachers Training course, Advance Diploma in Cosmetology, 5 are undergoing apprenticeship and 15 children are staying at home.
We are glad to inform you that children achieved good result, the passing percentage was 99.32% of the project. In 10th and 12th board examination children did well during the session. Let us have a look at achievements of our children during the current year at a glance. Sugandha scored 70% and Bhagyashree got 62.90% marks in class XII. On the basis of good marks in class XII, children got admission in renowned colleges and institutes.
Family Strengthening Programme:
The Family Strengthening Programme at Bhopal presently covers 509 children from 202 families spread over 31 habitations, including 12 villages. In the year 2008-09 sessions overall academic result of FSP children was around 70%. 71 students of age group between 16-20 who were appeared in class 10th and 12th out of them 80% has passed with good rank. Two of the FSP children are doing Bachelor of Engineering, 2 are imparted with ITI training and 2 youth are in polytechnic. FSP Bhopal promote several micro enterprise /Income generating activities through the concept of Self Help Groups constitution and facilitating them by developing linkages with financial institution for micro credit/ micro finance. Currently 6 Self Help Groups has been constituted and 70 caregivers are the members of these groups. We have worth mentioning tie up with Krishi vigyan Kendra and we availed 9-vocation training for 188 FSP beneficiaries from the institute. In the month of October’09 a vocation-training Center was opened where training on different job oriented skill training is offered. Sooner the center will get affiliated as recognized training center of Usha International company ltd. Bhopal FSP is developing partnership with other like-minded organizations, groups, institutes, individuals and Departments for its actively meeting its goal.
Celebration of festivals:
Festivals like Holi, Navratri, Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami, Dussehra, Diwali etc were celebrated in village with full vigor. This year on the occasion of Mother’s Day, our SOS mothers enjoyed picnic at Mahavir Tekri( a hilly area in Bhopal). Women’s Day, Mother’s Day, SOS Day, Children’s Day and Environment Day were also celebrated enthusiastically, in which children presented various cultural programmes and various Dignitaries graced the programmes. Our 16 Children with 8 mothers went to Governor House to tie Rakhi to Hon’ble Governor Shri Rameshwar Thakur on auspicious festival Rakshabandhan.
To groom up the overall development of our children & youth, several activities and programmes were organized during summer vacation. This year with the motto of personality development, a Youth Camp was organized at our village by Chinmaya Yuva Kendra Bhopal for the children of our village as well as of outside community. The topic of the camp was “Win the mind, win the world”, under which various resource persons of Chinmaya Mission imparted knowledge about moral values, setting goal in life, yoga, how to manage the mental energies efficiently to increase the capacity of mind, etc to youth. Moreover in the month of May a Career counseling session was also organized by a Professional Counselor from “Aadhar” organisation, for our children pursuing higher education.
Besides academics, children participated in various competitions, like painting, essay writing, Quiz, hand writing etc during the year. On the occasion of “World Water Day”, Coca-Cola India organized painting & quiz competitions at all India level, so at SOS Children’s Village, Bhopal we organized it with the participation of 40 children. Children made beautiful paintings and gave genuine answers on the topics Water Cycle, Climate Change, Mother earth, Our universe etc and won prizes. To create interest among children towards Hindi literature and to improve their hindi language. Sahitya Academy organized 3 days “Baal Sahitya Samaroh” in association with Baal Sahitya Shodh Kendra, Bhopal at SOS Children’s Village, Bhopal. Our 26 children participated in the programme and benefited by sharing their ideas and thoughts verbally and in written on the given topics.
Apart from these, different sports activities has also been organized during the year. In order to commemorate International Day of Peace and non violence, SOS Children’s Village, Bhopal organized SOS –FIFA Peace Football trophy-2009 for 5 days in the month of September. Teams of 16 well-known schools participated and finally SOS Children’s Village Bhopal Team won the Trophy.
One of our boy after successful completion of Teacher’s training Course from New Era Development Institute, Panchgani got selected as a job trainee Teacher in a renowned ‘Privilege Value Higher Secondary school’ situated in Badwani, Madhya and another boy selected as a Resource Manager (job trainee) in a recognized School namely Edu-Comp situated in Badwani, Madhya Pradesh. During the year 2 girls got settled through marriage with cultural rites and rituals and happy with their family. Money Gift savings were handed over to many of our settled youth to fulfill their different requirements as per their request.
In youth Facility the strength is 52. Out of 52 youth, 22 are studying in school, 13 youth are attending university, 3 are attending Vocational/Professional courses, 14 youth are undergoing apprenticeship. The youth who cleared class XII this year got admission in renowned vocational, professional and graduation courses. This year children did well in sports also, our three youths who are outstanding Football players, got selected by Sports Authority of India.
Health check-ups and Medical Camps:
Health is the priority for the children and mother so routine check up is done for them. A Free Medical Check-up, dental and vaccination Camp for our village as well as for beneficiaries of Family Strengthening Programme was also held in the village.
