Once again it is our pleasure to wish you & your family A Merry Christmas & A Very Happy New Year 2010. We wish to share with you the important developments & happenings that occurred during the year at SOS Children’s Village, Bangalore.
As on date 280 children; 139 boys & 141 girls are under our care. 142 children are living inside the SOS Children’s Village campus under the care of 13 loving SOS mothers & 9 aunts. 60 children are studying in boarding schools/colleges & 66 young boys are living at two SOS Youth Houses located near to our Village. 12 grown-up boys (7) & girls (5) are about to settle down & move to the main stream of society. 07 new children were brought home this year.
We have developed banana plantation & Rain water harvesting project is under progress in our village & this indeed is an educative program for our children & mothers. We also have a Learning Center coming up in our village which is a single storey building with a library, computer lab & an office room in it.
Children fared well in their annual exams. At present 117 children are studying in various schools, 12 grown up girls & 6 boys are studying in Pre-university, 9 girls & 12 boys are pursuing graduation in various streams; Arts, Commerce, Science & Hotel Management. Two girls who completed their Post-graduation in Business Management & Tourism & Travel Administration have now started working & are doing pretty good in their respective jobs. Two of our youth boys completed their Master of Business Management successfully & are in search of suitable placements. Two of our twin girls successfully completed their Bachelor of Engineering securing 82%. Many of our children are pursuing diploma & various vocational training courses.
At present, we have 110 tiny tots in our Nursery. Out of them, 21 are our kids from our Village & 89 are from neighborhood. We have 3 full time Nursery teachers for nursery, lower & upper nursery. Our Nursery teachers attended a seminar on ‘Creative Teaching’ on topics such as Multiple Intelligence, Innovative Teaching Techniques & Motivating students, organized at Parijma Neurodiagnostic & Rehabilitation Centre.
Sports & Activities:
Rashmi & Apurva; budding sports stars won second place in the 25th State level Inter School Volley Ball Championship held at Bangalore in the month of July 2009 organized by Spikers Youth Club. They also won First Prize in the Junior Level Volleyball Championship Tournament held as part of Indo-Lanka International Sports Development Program in Bangalore. One of our girls Megha, a rising star in athletics & sports won First place in 2km running race during Sun Feast World Athletic meet in Bangalore in the month of May 2009. One of our girls Sukanya secured first place in 100 meters & 400 meters running race & long jump in the District Level Sports Competition organized by Rotary Vidya Samsthe & she also received 15 points for all round best performance in sports.
SOS Day was celebrated on 23rd June 2009 with great zeal & enthusiasm in remembrance of 90th birth anniversary of our founder Father Dr. Hermann Gmeiner. It was also 60th year anniversary of SOS Children's Villages International which was another reason for the grand celebration. Cultural Extravaganza by our children was also part of the celebration. Our important festivals like Ugadi (New Year), Ganesh Chathurthi & Diwali was celebrated with religious joy & fervor by children, mothers & co-workers.
This year 8 mothers attended regional mothers workshop at SOS Children’s Village, Cochin. All the mothers are being rejuvenated in their work & committed to the cause of the organization. Zonal level dance competition for the south-zone was held in our Village.
We have 66 youth living in two youth houses & hostels. Both facilities are located a kilometer away from the SOS Village. Our youth did fairly well in academics & co-curricular activities. One of our boys who secured scholarship at Luther College in USA is doing well in II year degree currently & another boy is performing well in III year degree in Medicine. During summer vacation 6 of our youth who are at present in their Class X attended summer coaching based on their core subjects at Dharwad. Other youth boys had attended one month summer camp organized at Loyola ITI where they learnt Basic computer course, Hardware skills of computer & minor repair of electric gadgets. Our boys had also been for one day outing to a water falls called Talkad, where they enjoyed a lot playing in water.
As on date, 71 of our youth are happily settled & leading their lives independently. Two of our youth, a girl & a boy, got married in the month of January & May 2009 respectively. Both the families are happily well settled. Marriages of two more girls are going to be solemnized in October 2009. Many more youngsters are on the threshold of settling down. One of our girls successfully completed her Architecture course & is currently working with a reputed Architecture company.
Health checkup program called ‘Welcome to Tiens World’ organized in our Village for children, mothers & co-workers in the month of July 2009. The program provided us information about the importance of Acupuncture.
We have been supporting single women headed families living in poor economic condition. Financial support to educate & provide proper nutrition to their children & through a package of services we help these families to improve their living condition & attain self-sufficiency over a period of time. As on date, we support 231 families & their 450 children. Some of the children secured distinction in their annual exams. We are also supporting a bright, exceptionally talented boy from one of the FSP families with a Scholarship to pursue his graduation in Medicine. We are also providing scholarships for 25 children who are pursuing their education in the technical fields. Various programs such as Business Development & Income generation orientation program, legal awareness, career guidance & medical camps organized for FSP children & mothers. We are also providing tuitions for 200 children through 4 learning centers located in & around FSP family areas. An initiative was taken for pre-metric scholarship for FSP children belonging to minority communities.
