Warm Greetings from children, mothers and co-workers of SOS Children’s Village, Trichur!
A half of the year passed and we are sure you were looking forward to receive news of your sponsored facility. You may please see below a brief report on Village activities during the last six months.
By the grace of God children are keeping well and there is improvement in their height and weight. As per the annual medical check up they have no serious health problems. As you know, the Village is spread out in 10 acres of land with 17 family homes, well functioning dispensary, Village Store, community house, library, computer lab, auditorium, sports and arts room, basketball court, Youth facility, play ground, garden and Village Nursery. The Village Nursery is functioning in the Village for SOS and local community kids.
We admitted 6 new children to our Village. They were warmly welcomed by children, mothers and aunts that made them feel at home. They have also commenced their respective studies in primary schools. Today we are proud to say we have 286 children, 82 of them are youngsters, lives in Youth Facilities and 204 are on the roll of Village in 17 SOS families. Out of 203 children, 1 baby is staying in home, 5 kids are attending Nursery, 162 are school going and 35 are pursuing higher studies in various streams according to their interest and capacity.
Marriages and Jobs
During the last six months 13 youth (5 boys and 8 girls) settled in marriage and leading a happy life with their family. Four youth started working in various fields like nursing, teaching and hotel after successful completion of Hotel Management, General Nursing and Nursery Teachers Training. 17 youth are under job training in different fields.
The most distinguished achievement of our children is the outstanding performance and bagging Trophy for First Runner Up Team in the First All Kerala Kids Basket Ball Championship, which was organized by Kerala Basket ball Association. Among 13 teams participated our children got the attention and applause of the viewers and media. Three children got selected to Kerala Kids stars Basketball Team. This academic year also our children performed very well. In Class X and XII Board exams all the children passed with flying colors. For Class X there were four girls and for XII the number was 12. All the four girls who passed Class X joined in Class XI. Now children who passed Class XII are seeking admission for higher studies according to their interest like Graduation course in arts, commerce, nursing or fashion designing. In primary and high school 98% of our children passed with good marks and promoted to next classes. 35 girls are continuing graduation and vocational courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, Fashion Designing, Engineering, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Audiology and Speech learning Pathology.
All festivals like Vishu (beginning of calendar year), Good Friday and Easter (demise and re incarnation of Jesus Christ), Mothers Day and SOS Day were celebrated with great importance. Children attended spiritual session at Sree Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Thrissur and at St.Patrick’s Church, Mulayam. In connection to the World Water Day celebrations we organized a painting and quiz competition for children. Sun FM- 95, one of the popular FM Radio channels in Kerala visited our village on 6th of May to make a live report on the summer vacation programmes. A residential camp was organized for children of above 13 years. As a part of the package they got sessions on personality development, memory techniques, social commitment and responsibility, leadership and group behavior. A special session on Science of Learning was conducted by Mr.Salim, a leading figure in academic training in Kerala.
Children up to the age of 12 attended a five day camp on various topics at Village Auditorium lead by renowned trainers. They conveyed important values, morals, skills and qualities for life through games, songs and activities. Another six days creative and craft workshop in painting, paper craft and clay modeling was organized by Kerala State Lalitha Kala Academy and 15 days long drama workshop was conducted by Mr. Maniprasad a renowned Director of children’s theatre in Kerala and final year graduation student of School of Drama, Trichur.
The SOS Youth facility accommodates 82 residents – 57 attend schools, 9 attend vocational courses, 14 attend university studies and 2 are doing apprenticeship training. As per the school annual result all boys are promoted to next classes. This academic session three boys passed Class X and joined for Class XI. Seven cleared Class XII Board exam and they are planning for higher studies in various fields. As always they are encouraged with prizes. The boys enjoyed summer vacation also with lot of fun. They enjoyed six days camp at Wayanad hill station and Athirappilly with various activities like trekking, swimming and outings. They attended classes on personality development, confidence building, goal setting concentration technique, memory technique, multiple intelligence, retreat, exposure camp, nature camp, adolescent psychology and its solution methods and how to introduce to others. Boys who are doing higher education were given special career guidance and counseling sessions.
Family Strengthening Programme
We are supporting 506 children of 279 women headed families. 5 children settled in job. 46 children cleared Class X and Class XII Board Examination. We are extending Scholarship to ten students and encourage community children through educational kit distribution. We organized various kinds of programmes like skill training, summer camp, medical Camp, health check-up, Hepatitis B immunization, health and hygiene awareness classes, adolescent education programme, legal awareness class, tuition classes, Painting camp, computer classes, Water Day celebration, Mothers Day Celebration and World Health Day celebration to beneficiaries. 10 mothers started income Generating units.
