A child sponsorship report from Davao in the Philippines. Written in 2009.

Dear Friend,

A whole year passed and it is a great pleasure to greet you again as a valuable member of our worldwide family whose kind support helps us to provide a better environment here in SOS Children’s Village Davao.  Our total population now is 142 children and 47 youths. So, we are very happy to share with you the recent developments that took place in 2009.

The year started with a series of meetings from the different department to plan for the whole year activities.  We were also happy that most of our children continue to show good performance in their third grading examination in January. Five high school students made it to the honor list.

Before January ended, the Davao Football Association in cooperation with the local city Sports Office held a Football Festival last January 31.  It was a one-day tournament involving our own SOS children in the four categories. The 15-year old & under category won the 1st place; the 12-year old & under category got the 2nd place while the 10-year old & under and the Elementary girls category got the 3rd place.

Much more, the same organizers held another tournament by March 14 in celebration of the “Araw ng Dabaw” (Davao City Day).  SOS Davao children again joined in the same four categories. Our Elementary girls group won the over-all champion while the 14-year old & under and the 10-year old & under groups won 3rd place.

On the other hand, as the school year 2008-2009 ended in March, our children finished their classes and passed all their requirements. Seven children graduated in Kindergarten, 14 in Elementary, four in High School and five in College.

When summer vacation begun in April, we preferred not to implement our local summer camp and instead we focused on summer tutorial/enhancement lessons to all our children from elementary to high school.  Every Monday to Friday, our three Village Educators conducted these enrichment lessons to help our children perform better in school. We gave importance to their education because we observed that there is really a need, based from the result of their school performances.

At the later part of summer, SOS Davao hosted the first ever National Youth Congress from April 19 to 26. “Adventure of a Lifetime” was the theme of the SOS National Youth Congress organized by the National Training Center of SOS Children's Villages Philippines to gather 70 youths from the 7 Children’s Villages in the country. Activities focused in honing their personalities and the individualistic phase of every village was vividly seen in the entire assembly of young minds.

Then come June, the end of summer vacation. As the new school year began, all children and youths showed enthusiasm in going back to school. Our students were enrolled in the different public and private schools within the Davao province.

In line with the celebration of Nutrition Month in July, our SOS Davao Nursery School showcased the children’s talent in dancing during the culmination celebration.  The children actively participated in the parlor games. For the mothers of the preschoolers, the acquaintance party was also done on that day.  There was an induction of homeroom officers and the presentation of their talent in cooking especially in menu making and table setting arrangement.

The 28th Foundation Anniversary of the Children’s Village happened during the first week of September.  Proclaimed by the Davao City local government as the “SOS week”, various activities were lined up starting with a motorcade. A Eucharistic celebration was also arranged then a two-day gathering of almost a hundred youths from the seven provinces in the Mindanao Region. Tagged as the 1st Mindanao Regional Children’s Congress, these youths gathered to discuss and to take note of their voices on Child Rights and Child Protection. Some of our youths took the lead and facilitated the different discussions.

Enriching our children’s inclination in the sports soccer football, our team participated in the SOS GOAL FOR A CAUSE, a Mindanao-wide Soccer Festival held last October 24 and 25.  The elementary girls won as champion while the 12-year old & under won as the first runner-up.

These are the activities that transpired in 2009. Right now, the children are still busy in school and most of them verbally expressed that they are excited for Christmas. Our staff is now organizing the different Christmas activities for our children and youths. In the meantime, in behalf of the whole SOS Davao family, our sincerest gratitude for your unending support! You may not be here but the stewardship that you bestow on us through your generous contribution and ever growing concern, inspire us to do our best for these children. May we continue to work together for our children! Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year to you and your family!

With warm wishes and best regards,

Luis Seras
Village Director
